I just bought my first corvette. It is an '89 convertible. I have seen what it is rated at 0-60 (6.2 seconds) and it does not even come close. It may do it in 8 or 9 seconds. It does not sound down muffled down or like its missing or anything. The car only has 79,000 miles. I know its old but should it really be this slow? Does anybody have any advice for me? thanks
Do you still have the original catalytic converters on? They are usually plugged by then.
A backpressure test (easily done by a good muffler shop) could tell.

When I bought my '85 in January it still had the original exhaust on it and it was pretty crappy. I replaced it with Magnaflows and a new cat, much quicker now.

Welcome to the Forum!
Do you have a six speed or automatic? If you have the automatic, which rear gear ratio do you have? The RPO codes (located on the center console door) will help you out answering that question.
How are you timing your 0 to 60 jaunts? Stopwatch? Wristwatch? Do you have a passenger with you or is it just you?
When you launch the car, do you produce any significant wheel spin?
Have you talked with the previous owner to see when they last performed a major tune (mentioned already by several responders)?
Did you have someone inspect the car before you bought it (I'm assuming this is your first Vette)?

I would check the catalytic convertor and then give the car a complete
tune up and replace the fuel filter and air filter. I don't care what rear gear is in it the car shouldn't be dog slow. This whole thing reeks of
but just in case it's not try the above.
1 post, stupid forum name, stupid subject line, stupid, unattached post.
guaran-ball-bearin-teed.
idiot. take a hike and get out.
Did I miss something? Did a post get erased? Anyway, first thing to do when you buy a used Corvette is immediatly change every fluid and every filter and check the easy things like plugs and wires. It's an old car, can't go by what Road & Track said about it when it was new.
Open the rear hatch, lift the carpet and you will find a big key. Take out key, close hatch, lift fuel door lid, insert key, wind like crazy. Go around to front and raise hood, poke the squirrels with cattle prod, close hood. Git and Go, You Be Gone Quick.

Since it's new to you. You will need to learn how to drive it. You didn't mention if it was a std or auto but you might be slipping too.
The L83 intimidates the other vettes with its ticking injectors. When the light turns green the L83 is goneand the othervettes just sit there with tick tick tick running through their brain thinking what the heck was that.
