Does anyone know of a good service center for corvettes in Central Illinois? We used our regular mechanic to have a tune up done, (1st time he's worked on this car...usually does a great job on our other cars) and somethings not right now. He's went all thru it and can't figure out what's wrong. He suggested we find someone else who specialized in vettes. Any suggestions???

Talk to Vettetech81 here on the Forum. He has a web site at www.rickanthonymotorsports.com
He is in Downers Grove. I hope that is not too far north for you. He is an ASE mechanic who works on C4s/C5s/C6s out of his home garage after hours. I have met and talked with him and his fiance. Both seem to be great folks and have quite the following in the Chicago area.
I predict that he will soon have to quit his day job and devote full time to his other business.
St. Louis may be closer than Downers Grove for you. Contact Bill at 314-852-8214, he is a mechanic at Elco Chevrolet in St. Louis, and he does work on the weekends. He is very reasonable, and pretty much only works on Vettes, at least on the weekends that is. He did work for me and I was very happy. Best of luck.
Well, those are both about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs from us. I really don't want to drive it that far. It's running so badly, I'm not sure it would make it. Plus the gasoline smell is so strong, I know it's getting terrible gas mileage, and I don't want to pass out from the fumes! I'm really hoping for someone less than 100 miles from us.
Was the car running better before your mechanic did the tune up? Sounds like a firing order problem, plug or wire not completely connected or a cap/rotor not seated correctly. I'd check that stuff myself before taking it to a mechanic.
Yeah, we did that when we got it back the first time. He changed the plugs and the fuel filter the 1st time and it started to run really badly. So we took it back and then he changed the plug wires. It still runs bad. It's really rough when you give it gas. We aren't very good at fixing it, so we'd just rather pay someone else. We are just hoping to find someone who knows what they are doing, and don't really want to use the dealership. I guess we will if we have to.
It honestly, really sounds like something simple. I don't mean to push, but if you'd like a small list of things to look for or need a firing order diagram, I can e-mail them to you. If all the mechanic did was replace the fuel filter and plugs and the car now runs rough, I can't believe the problem is much of anything serious or requiring a specialist. Sorry I can't help w/someone local, but good luck.

He replaced the spark plugs, wires and fuel filter. He did not clean the engine. We thought about disconnecting the battery to see if it would reset the computer or something. Anyone think that might work?
I would search all over and see if you can find something that may have become disconnected while he was in there. I am no big mechanic, after all I use the Vette Master, but if that is all he did it has to be something stupid like that, Best of luck.
Springfield (about 60 mi south) had a great Corvette mechanic who specialized in TPIs... Ron Kane of Kane Automotive. He's had business location problems due to local zoning board issues, but you might give him a buzz... if you want a number, send me a PM.
