'90 Speedo sensor replacement and engine cleaning tips...
Well my digi-speedo went apes*** on me and started flingin numbers at me like a slot machine, yet all I won was a &*^%&^ headache. I brought it to the ppl that put in my new tranny recently, they ordered a part to fit in there, but it wouldnt work, so they tried putting the old one back in, dropped it on the floor, put it in anyway and now it works. WTF........ its been working for the past 2 days no problems now. So goes the phrase..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I know its gonna do it again eventually, and I saw a slight delay as I was gunning it on the highway from the reading of 50-60 mph. I was told, they dont make speedometer sensors anymore for a 90. In fact, most speedo sensors I was told were discontinued due to aftermarket companies not stepping up to make any. Basically, I was told if it goes out again, I'm up s***s creek without a paddle. I posted this on the tech forum and a few other members had this problem, but werent half as lucky so far. Anyone else?
BTW, my engines gotten dusty as hell from sitting while it was waiting for the tranny and Ive procrastinated too long to clean it up. Aside from the usual precautions to sensors and equipment protection, What suggestions does anyone have for engine cleaning/shining products?
Does it change depending on the outside temperature? My 90 with automatic is wacky as well. The hotter it is outside, the worse it is. If it's in the 80's it jumps all over the place or doesn't work at all. The odometer is slow as well. I drove about 10 miles and it registered 2 miles. On a cold day it works fine, or at least better.
I have a '90, which is why this thread caught my attention. I do not have this problem, nor have I ever heard of it. I would be very interested in answers to your questions. If, in fact, the speed sensor is no longer being produced, then I need to get a couple of used ones now, right?
How 'bout it, guys. Anyone out there with answers to these question?
Try vette2vette.com for used parts. I got a Lateral Accelorometer from them for my 1990 Vette that was not produced anymore. That's probably your best bet.
I don't even know where the speed sensor is located. I'm a Ford man with several full size Bronco's and F body pickups but I do have a couple of Corvettes. My other Corvette is a 1972, at least it's easy (no electronics) to work on. This speedometer problem on the 1990 has had me stumped though, especially with the outside temperature fluctuation. I noticed today that the instant average has my gas mileage at around 81 mpg. I believe that as much as I believe that the 90 can go from 57 mph to 17 mph to 72 mph to 4 mph in about three seconds as the speedometer indicates. Just think, if it had that type of acceleration, braking, and it got 80 mpg everyone would want one!
I have a garmin navagation device quite small called NUVI 350 and it shows my speed as I drive. It is as accurate as the cars own system. Could use something like that if need be
Mike T, thanks. That's a good idea if I can't find a speed sensor. I still can't understand why mine is so sensitive to the outside temperature change.
