I have a chance to purchase a 1994 red Cobra mustang with only 12,000 miles on it from someone I know. I currently have a 1984 corvette with only 42,000 miles on it. What I am concerned with is I am about to get married and then probably a year or so later, starting to have children. I was "thinking" it will be very hard to drive the vette much once I have children. I was thinking well I could buy this mustang and still have a very nice sports car and then I could also take a child with me in it for weekend rides since it has a backseat. Of course down the road at some later date, I would eventually go back to a corvette since that is my true passion. Is anyone else in this same boat or already experienced this scenario. I am not sure what to do. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have two young children (ages 10 and 5) and they absolutely LOVE my 92! It has taught them patience and self-control because I can only take one at a time...plus with no passenger side airbag I can feel safe as a parent with them in front. There was one bickering fest early on but after they lost their riding priviledge (sp?) for a week there has been no issues. An added benefit is when my wife and I get to go out it is just the two of us and no kids!!!!:o My $0.02 anyway. Good luck with your decision! I do not regret my choice one bit.
It all depends on if you have a "family car" in the mix. With proper planning of whose driving which car you can make it work. It's simple the one with the family car transports the kids and viola you keep the vette.
KEEP THE VETTE!! I do not have kids yet, but I still do nto drive my Vette every day. I have a Taurus that I have like $4,000.00 in in and I drive it every day. If we have kids, it will work for that. I personally prefer to have a nice vehicle that I am careful when and where I dirve it, and one that I can take anywhere. The Taurus will do most things I want it to do, meanwhile I know anytime I want to take the cover off my Vette, I can do that and drive it. You already admitted you would get another one (Vette) so do not sell your vette and regret it later. Invest a few thousand in a daily driver four door. If you find a good buy, yu will not lose money if you need to sell it again and buy something else.
try to be realist... how many times do you think you are "really" gonna get up and say: "I'm taking the kid for a ride"
if it's 5 times a year... I don't think it's worth the hassle. If you truly think you can easily do that every week-end... buy the mustang.
If you want to spend time with yourself and the kid, why not sit it next to you when you wash the vette. He'll learn to appreciate the corvette look... and when he is 16, you can both have one and go for drives.
For someone who has kids to someone who does not. Even if you keep your vette. You may think you can protect it, by say a car cover, but believe me the baby eventually turns into a toddler with toys and they will run, hit and climb on your vette at sometime....it's inevitable.
I don't have a problem with your thinking, but just one thing: the Mustang is not a sports car. YOur Corvette is.
You may regret someday selling the Corvette, but as you said, you can always replace it. Unless by the time you choose to do so, the prices are like C2s.
I have a four mouth old daughter and she rides in mine just fine. How many children do you think you'll have? You won't be able to take two, to the doctor at the same time in the 'vette. Will you be at work durning the day? If so, there shouldn't be a problem then. If you were home durning the day with several kids and the 'vette was your only car, you'd need one that held more people. If your partner has a bigger car, it's all good. One thing that I have found very helpful IS having the child up front. On the way to and from my parents, I can hold a bottle for her, rock the car seat so she sleeps, toss the nuk in, cover her up, protect her bobble head with a pillow, everything but change her really! If my partner takes her in her Vibe, she will cry in the back seat and she can not do anything but pull over. If your about to get married and have kids, there will be a LOT of bills. Can you afford a new car to?
I kept my vette and picked-up my daughter (infant at the time).
Now she loves riding in it
My only concern is that she asked me the other day (she is 8 years old now), if she gets my vette if I die
Get a Camaro. Everybody has a Mustang. The coupe wouldn't be too bad with one kid, but carrying all the crap you need for a newborn in a convertible would be a hassle. If you want to take the missus and the kid for a fun ride or cruise, it ain't gonna happen in either one. Yeah, I'd get a Camaro until the kid(s) gets their own car.
Buy a beater for the kids to ride around in. It's just going to get filled up with cookie crumbs, dirty diapers, spilled formula, kiddie toys, car seats etc. You don't need to have anything special for that. Then you can do the milk and bread runs in the Corvette. Honey, Do you need anything from the store?
I have a 93 and my four year old rides in it to the local car shows, goes cruising in it with me all the time. He has a booster seat. He's been riding it it since he was baby. No passenger side air bag until 94. As long as the child is in the appropriate seat there are no issues and the C4 Corvettes are very safe cars anyways. We have two other cars and the Corvette is more of a toy than anything else.
I had my 86E and my 95 before I met my wife. We got married and had a son that is 21 months old right now and one on the way in November. I can tell you with experience that when you have a kid the vette will see most of it's time parked. I do drive one to work every once in awhile but only two seats and three people doesn't work. I tried to talk my wife into letting me get a Mustang GT...you know because of the back seat. Hell no, "not safe and the back seat is too small" she says. So the vettes see maybe 500 miles a year each. So we got a 06 F150 crewcab FX4 instead. JMO.

Was there a cobra in 94? I didn't think so, i thought it came back in 96. If it was a 93 cobra I'd do it. But the 94-04 body style is drab, even the mustang guys I work with don't like them.

Looks like its time to get a second car to drive the family around.
I have a 92 vet, and I have a 19 month old son. I will admit for the first 2 summers I barely had time to drive my car but when I went into the garage and it sat so clean and looked so pretty i was proud not only to be a new father but still a corvette owner. This year I put in a teather bolt for my sons car seat and I took him for his first corvette ride. He seemed to enjoy the wind blowing through his hair and he was so excited that he could look up and see the sky ( targa top off ). To make this story short, after a few rides my wife wanted to talk our son for a walk in the stroller and it was next to the vet in the garage. My son cried when I put him in the stroller so I asked him if he wanted to go for a walk and he nooded "no", he then walked over to the vet and started to pull off the cover up to the passanger door and pointed inside the car window. I asked him if he wanted to go for a ride in the vet and he nooded "yes" what a proud moment for Daddy but a let down for Mamma. So I took my son for a ride to McDonald's and we shared a sundae together and we had a father and son bonding moment. My opinion "keep the vet" and for the time you can't drive it, the one moment between your child and yourself alone on a cruise will make it all worth the wait...Good luck and I hope I helped in your decision either way.
