i took my 84 vette to get diagnosed for possible overheating. the mechanics said i needed a new raditor and was the cause for it to boil over because my radiator was blocked,so i replaced it with a new radiator..and it wasnt boilin over any more but it feels like its still overheating cause the upper hose would get real hot and full of presssure and my check engine light comes onafter driving for just 5 mins.and also my exhaust coming from the engine would get red hot ..im lost helpp!!!!
I'm not sure what your problem is but I had the exhaust get red hot just behind the pre-cats and I had fuel injector problems.
I'm no mechanic but I think what was happening in my instance was the injectors were just dumping fuel into the motor and what was not being burned was coming out the exhaust and being heated up thru the pre-cat. I had alot of black soot on the tips of the exhaust too.
Good luck I hope you can sort it out.

Upper radiator hose is the return hose. It should get hot when the t/stat opens and hot coolant is being pumped from the motor back to the radiator. Put your t/stat back in, running with no stat is no-no. As for the other issues, just what the other members already said.
The upper radiator hose is suppost to get hot. The SES light means you have a code in the ECM. Don't remove the t-stat. I don't know if aminnich was stating a LT1 (reverse coolant flow) or a L82. What temps does it run on the highway and in traffic or idle? Pull the code and post it so we can help.
Put that T-stat back in! Without it, your water circulates too fast, and doesn't have a chance to cool off.
That's what my car was set up like when I got it--not thermostat, fan wired to stay on all the time. The problem was that the rad was so caked with junk it wouldn't cool.
