Default ac compressor types?

Rockauto has two acdelco reman compressors - another has r4 marking - what does it mean?

Also there is one with long shaft and one with short shaft. What does this mean?

It has to do with which clutch you are using. You should always replace both the comp and the clutch at the same time, and believe it or not, it's usually cheaper. (At least it is at Auto Zone.)

Do you mean both markings has to do with clutch?

I think shaft lenght is associated with clutch type, but what a heck is r44 ??

Has it something to do with refrigerant?

I'm not sure, I have run into the situation where the compressors are filld with different oil for R-12 refrigerant or with oil for 134A. I'd go with the latter if that is the case. You should convert now at any rate. There are different shaft lengths on the R-4 compressors, and that has dealt me fits when changing clutchs.

The R4 is a radial compressor used from 84-87.....There are two different units used from 88-91.The R12 compressor will work with either R12 or R 134 but won't fit in place of the R 134 compressor which will fit from 88-96.SO that makes three that I know of.

This will probably confuse more than it clarifies.. but I bought the second one listed here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ght=compressor

It's a new Delco unit. There are different p/ns for original compressor, replacement new compressor, reman compressor... and the p/ns have changed as well.

R4 is the type of compressor design use on a ton of cars. Yours is an R4 compressor, no matter which one you buy for your car.

R4 isn't a choice. They are all R4. That second one down will work for you if you want a new one.

Reman is listed on there as well. I don't know what any of the non-delco ones fit, and I didn't want to waste my money on a chinese rebuild, so I didn't bother trying to figure out the long vs short, etc.

You can also get yours rebuilt at a local shop for less than all of the above, and support your local repairman.

Auto Zone is usually the cheapest if you go re-man, alot of people don't, but they do have the best warrantee, and they will sell you a New Unit too, usually cheaper too. I agree with CentralCoaster on the local rebuilder part!

That's the one I got from Superior Chevy. Haven't put it on yet.
