I am helping a friend replace a broken antenna on her '96 CE. What's the best way to remove the antenna? Do I take the wheel and wheel well out or is there a different way? Any caveats I should be aware of?

Re: Help. Need to replace antenna (QwikSilvr)
If you need to replace the entire antenna (motor, housing, etc.) there is a tech tip for removing it from the car.
If you are just replacing the part that goes up and down you cna follow the instructions that came with the replacement:
remove nut holding mast to body
pull and remove old antenna
compare length of nylon rope to new antenna - if they don't match remove motor, disassemble and remove missing pieces.
have someone turn radio on, insert replacement
turn radio off, motor should grab the new nylon rope and pull it in
don't worry if some of the antenna still pokes up
replace the nut
turn radio off and on a few times and the antenna should go up and down correctly
i replaced mine 94 should be same as 96. first remove rear speaker there is a antenna connection in there. jack car and remove the rear wheel. remove licence plate, remove 1st tail light, then 2nd tail light. remove the antenna motor. there are different views here, some have done this job complete from under the car with the tire on. my advice is look the job over and decide for your self.
I was able to replace my entire antenna (motor and all) on my '91 without removing tire. If you don't like scars on your arms though, removing the tire would be a big help. I was able to reach the mounting bolts from under the car, and had to remove the outer most taillight to get to a screw that held a small ground cable on. I was able to remove the taillight by removing the back-up light on that side (this is where the scars came from). Actually though once I figured out what needed to be done, it really didn't take that long. If you are changing the entire unit, you will have to pull back some carpet in the rear to get to the wire/antenna connections. Have fun !! :seeya
