I have a 91 with no mods. When I first start up it runs a little rough for a few minutes and then runs great.
I just changed the plugs and air filter and same thing.
Is this normal??
Getting light smoke at start up? That might be a leaking injector. Easy to check.
I have about 15 minutes seat time in an F4C (vietnam era). Does that count? Otherwise about the same seat time in the C-130 (I was flight crew, but not pilot).
Now a days the sims are so realistic not only is training done in them but check rides too. For example in the triple 7 (B-777) the first time the crew see's the bird is when they are on the line. Everything is done in the sim.
Could just be just a cranky ole engine. Mine does that a little bit if I push it to go before it's warmed up. I usually just let it idle until temps are at 105°F then move out. Primarily I choose that temp as the O2 sensors should just be at operating temperature and the system is changing modes (open to closed).
Could be a dirty throttle body and/or IAC valve (not so much the IAC as that would show up after its up to temp) but since when one gets dirty the other usually is too. Check the backs of the throttle plates, remove air duct, open the throttle up and look at the plates and around the edges of the plates. Any carbon build up will prevent the plates from closing properly causing excess air entering the system.
