I have a slow leak. I just bought a couple of cans of R-12 at NAPA for $40 each, more than I spend on a good bottle of Scotch...
Anyway, I don't want to use this stuff to find the leak if I can avoid it. I know you're not supposed to to mix R-134 into an R-12 system, and I don't want to convert. Can I evacuate the system and put 134 in just to get dye in and look for the leak, or will it make a mess out of my system's mineral oil charge, or worse yet, deprive my compressor of lubrication and destroy it?
How do you find a leak in an R-12 system without venting the stuff through the leak??
Injecting the dye isn't the problem, I have the kit. Putting dye in doesn't raise the system pressure so the compressor won't run. I was hoping to find something that I could use to get the system pressurized enough to run without wasting $40/Lb r-12.
Anyway, I just decided to risk of can of the stuff after finding a small puddle of what looked to be mineral oil on the frame under the condensor fittings. So I tightened them, put dye and a can of r-12 in. Hopefully it will hold a seal, and I can save the next $40 for scotch instead of freon.
