Hi All
I have a '92 Vette which I am restoring. I have the ball joints off and I notice these cars have that leaf spring going across in the front. I have an annoying rattle everytime I go over anything, even a rough road so I am going through the front end hoping I will find the source. So far it doesnt look like the ball joints or the shocks are the cause. The control arm bushings are all fairly new, having already been replaced. I am thinking perhaps the jounce bushing between that spring and the lower control arm is making the rattle. Any suggestions on how to fix? Anyone have an idea what the rattle could be? I have tracked down and fixed other rattles such as inside the doors and this is the last one. The car is turning out really nicely and I guess I have been bitten by the 'Vette bug. I've owned so many cars over the years and I thought I was a Mustang guy, but no more.
HMMMM, COULD be a loose spring, check and see if it is tight, but there is a lot of pressure on that and I don't know of any that are loose, altho I had an earlier C4 that had cracked the spring. I would look in the "pockets" in front of each wheel well, under the hood, and see if one of those items might be loose and rattling when you hit a bump.
I had a rattle for sometime and found out it was actually the brake pads. There are retainer clips that can become loose as pads wear.
Try, going over a familiar area where you know the rattle always occurs and just apply the brakes enough to engage braking, if the rattle is gone it's probably these retainer clips.
Actually it is the missing air dam causing the rattle. The missing pieces also supported the front body panels but now they hang loose and rattle. I have a new air dam and mounting kit on it's way thanks to the help of this forum.
Check the hood for movement when it is closed. There should be not free play when it is shut. If so, adjust the stop. Many structural sounding rattles come from the hood, especially noticed over rough roads.
