I don't powershift on my C4 because its's an automatic.
I do occasionally PS on my C6, it's an MN6.

Powershifting stresses the entire drivetrain. If you PS in a twenty year old car, be prepared to spend some money on repairs.

Powershifting itself involves shifting gears while keeping your foot on the gas [open throttle]
Its done in drag racing to keep the RPMs up between shifts.

Others can add to this.

Powershifting is exactly that... keeping your right foot firmly planted on the floor, and shifting as fast as you can between gears. Done correctly, you will realize quicker ET's as opposed to letting off between gear changes. It takes practice to be proficient at powershifting, and yes.. it is hard on the vehicle (20 years old or otherwise!), but that's all part of the experience.

You have a 4+3 transmission and you should practice exactly like you will do it at the track.

Personally I don't like power shifting. It too easy to grind a pound or have the revs go out of control, even with a rev limiter I think the engine can have enough inertia to go way past a safe RPM. I'd rather lose a tenth or two and be safe with my motor.

Before you practice power shifting, practice writing checks real fast, or see how fast you can whip out your charge card.

If you're a cash person you may develop a light feeling in and around left hip pocket area.

Just a word of advice. Be prepared for the back end to break loose going into 2nd and maybe 3rd. Other than that have fun.

I've been doing it for years on mine, never had any issues. You just have to do it correctly, and you won't wear it out or break anything.

... not just your clutch amigo. The attempt at powershifting is to get going as quickly as possible. In other words, to drive the vehicle to the edge of its performance envelope. Everything motor, drivetrain, and suspension to some degree gets stressed.

Enjoy

Just as a baseball does not continue to accelerate once it's left the pitcher's hand, an engine will not continue to increase its revs once the limiter kicks in...if that's what you are talking about.

All Show, one tip I can give you when you are just learning to powershift: don't be tentative!!! That's how you miss shifts.
You have to GO for it....100% even on the first try. Hint: you have to try to break the shift lever off.

I have only powershifted a long long time ago on a Fiat that I did not care about. And that was one a couple of times at best. I hear you have to do it " CORRECTLY" a lot. Can we go a little further in to doing it " CORRECTLY".

Also, What does this do to the syncros?

Sorry if my questions seem adolescent.

I dont powershift at all. I just try to be as fast as possible and making the shift fluid feeling. i completely let off the gas.

Maybe when i pull up beside a nice exotic or a sportbike on the highway that I really want to destroy, i will powershift.

I need to make a video on how to do this. Words just can't describe, you really have to show someone in person what all goes into it.

If you want to start out practicing, just do it with lower RPM shifts. like 3-4, 4-5 shift and do it in lower RPMs, like 2500-3000 range so you don't get your revs up. You can ALSO do this while the car is off, just set the ebrake and have fun shifting away.

The trick is to shift it without letting off the gas. Now of course if you have your pedal floored, its going to over-rev when you let off the clutch. The trick to practice is this: KNOW where your "sweet spot" for the clutch is, that little spot where it grabs. Press the clutch down until you are at that spot, but just before getting there and before you shift, let off the gas JUST a tad bit and keep your toe ready to let off the gas completely in case you miss shift or something. Now... AS FAST AS YOU CAN, shift into the next gear (slam the shifter quick and fast) and before you finish letting the clutch back out, hit the gas again full throttle.

I can do this so quickly that it sounds just like an automatic shifting with zero shifting lag.

so within a split second, you will be letting off the gas just a tad, pressing the clutch, and shifting ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

really, word's can't quite explain HOW to do it, you have to SEE it in person to know what we are talking about.

BTW, if you don't have one aready, GET A SHORT SHIFTER!
