I decided to go AC-Delco new. I also spoke to a local vette expert (H&H) and having heard what can happen to the rest of the components if the rebuilds' bushings or bearings are not just right.... I decided new. That is also what they recommended and I trust them. Basically if I plan to keep it go AC-Delco, if I'm dumping it don't worry about. Sounds pretty good to me.

Thanks everyone.

Interesting to read your thread as I am having the same exact problem with my 93 LT1. I've always used parts from AZ or Checkers, depending on who's cheaper, but this is the first time I'll be working on the Vette. So, does the new unit come with the solenoid or is that extra? Did you have your old unit tested first? Has the new starter fixed the problem? Any advice on the install? I'll be doing mine next weekend.
Thanks,
Tim

Your choice obviously...I put a rebuilt from Schucks in 5 years ago and it hasn't missed a beat. I also replaced the alternator with a NEW one from AZ not a rebuilt from AZ a month or so ago.I think Autozone now offers new or rebuilt.Good luck

So far so good she's still starting up fine. There must be a dead spot on it. I have a new one on order. When I changed the oil yesterday I looked at what I was in for: other than the two metal lines running forward looks like it is a fairly easy job. The bolts look very easy to get to, I should have no problem with it up on the ramps. As long as those lines flex some it should come right out of there.

Yes I believe it is a whole unit. The rebuild one I saw at Autozone was a complete unit.

I've been pretty much in the position on this vehicle that if something goes bad, I replace it with a new OEM part. On items that start exhibiting behavior as if to warn me, I replace them with new OEM parts. Other than the spark plugs, Corsa, wheels (OE), and tires, it's all original OEM parts. The seats are new, trim pieces, transparent roof (OEM), etc. I figure if I can keep up with it, it will stay in very nice condition and near new operational condition for a long time to come.

I guess in a way I can't afford a brand new one, or similar but I can sure as heck preserve the one I have. I'm kind of **** about replacing with new OEM parts. So that weighed my decision as well.

Hopefully things will be fine until I get time to swap them out. Hey if I got 14 years from the first one.... the new one will probably out last the engine.

90% of starter failures are worn brushes. I have not been into an LTx starter but new brushes can be put in an L98 starter in 30 minutes or less. Just a thought.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I think the LT1 starter sells for 2-3 times what the L98 starter sells for. Imagine that. Guess there must be something different between the two, but hopefully brushes can still be changed easily.

Seems that way on a lot of parts; earlier models same part much cheaper, newer part slightly different design 2-3x as much.

If that the original one, i'd just replace it. I replaced mine a year ago. it took all of 30 mins or less to pull it out and put the new one back in, and I am not that mechanical. They tested my starter at Discount Auto Parts and it was definately bad.

Interestingly enough, it old one wasn't even a Delco starter...it was some *** brand
