1995 auto shifter button doesn't go up when shifted
My shifter button on top of my automatic shifter will not go up all of the way when I put in in gear (goes about half way). I pulled the accessory trim piece off and lubed all of the gears and spring, but it did not help. What do I need to do? This started about 3-4 days ago. Could the mechanic who fixed my manual shaft seal have messed up the position of the linkage? Would that affect this? I am getting frustrated with having to wiggle my shifter every time I put it in park to get my keys out of the ignition.
Have you already diconnected the foot brake/shifter interlock solenoid?
They are known for causing problems, but usually keep the shift button from depressing, not 'popping back up'. I assume you already sprayed some wd40 down under the shifter ****, if not try that next.
I have not disconnected the solenoid yet, but I have sprayed WD-40.
That foot brake shifter interock solenoid was only on the 94-95 or maybe 95-96 a4's. Safety feature so kids could not get it out of park unless footbrake was depressed. Mine did the opposite, froze so I could not get the button to depress to get it out of park. Since I have no kids that will be sitting in the driver's seat with motor running I just removed the solenoid. Easy to do.
The guy at the shop where I had my manual shaft seal replaced is going to take a look at my linkage and see if it needs adjusting. I am hoping that this is the problem. thanks. keep any ideas coming please.

I'd say it does since that's when the problem started. This adjustment is critical. If the shifter does not allow it to engage a gear fully, it can cause major transmission damage in time. This is especially important in the drive position since that's where you spend most of your time. I modified my shifter to guarantee that the transmission detents would locate the shifter, instead of vice-versa. In other words, it's a way to insure that it's always fully in gear.

Yep! Yes! That is what it was...he adjusted it and the button now goes up all of the way. Thanks guys!
It involved removing the shifter and modifying the steps that the lock works against.
Glad to hear he got it fixed right. I hate to say it but it was sloppy of him not to verify proper adjustment after having it apart the first time. Very simple and very critical for the reasons I mentioned earlier.
Hey, CorvetteKid...so, from what I told you, do you think it is adjusted right now? The button goes up when in park like it had done all of the time before I took it in. Do you think it's good to go now? It seems to shift well. I hope it's right.

It sounds fine now. No doubt it's much better than it was in any case.
