I've only had my 1992 Corvette about 1 month now, and I was wondering how can I tell for sure which suspension my car has. In between the power seat controls is a black (maybe repainted?) plate with a hole in the middle of it, but no visible writing on it. Is there a way, from looking at the shocks or something, that I can tell which suspension is actually on the car??
The car rides a little bit rough, even for a Corvette, and I'm thinking it may need shocks. But because I am not sure which suspension is on the car, I don't know what shocks to buy.
Also, if the car DOES have the adjustable suspension from the factory, can I "override" it and just put regular shocks on the car??
Thanks.
If the car had adjustable suspension there would be a switch on the center console with 3 settings just in front of the center console
Look at the codes on the build sheet
In 92 I believe it is under the center console door
Only other place is on the storage compartment door behind the drivers seat
Z51 is the sport suspension and will ride rougher
Do a search for RPO codes on here and on google
Tell ya everything you need to know

The factory adjustable shock will have a small box on the top with wires running to it. They could have been replaced with standard shocks quite easily.
You'll have to check your RPO sheet to see what your car came with originally. What it has now could be anything....
All Fourth Generation convertibles have the FE1 base (soft) suspension.
Spring wize they might, but shock absorber wize they could still be adjustable or regular.
If it ever had adjustable it will say FX3 on the code list under the centre console lid. If you look at the top of the shocks the adjustable will have a wire connected to an actuator. Being a second hand car it could have anything on it now and the only way youll know for sure is by looking at the shocks to see what they are.
If you have the "Service Parts Identifier" label under the center console lid, (RPO list), look for these codes:
FE1 Base Suspension
FX3 Selective Ride Control
Z07 Adjustable Performance Suspension
Cars with no optional suspension packages got the FE1 base suspension. In 1992, you could get FX3 as a stanalone package in either the coupe or convertible but it came with the base springs and base swaybars.
Z07 was the heavy duty suspension and included larger sway bars, the FX3 shocks, poly bushing in the lower front A-arms, and stiffer springs. Z07 cost over $2000 and only 738 cars got that package which was available on coupes only.
