Howdy ~~ I'm sort of a dumb guy ... dumb and impulsive. My 14 year old son is the real car brains of our family and since he was on a sleepover at one of his buddies last night, that left me on my own this morning. Anyway, I'm always looking at the Vette ads in the morning paper because some day I'm going to get a cheap Z06 or something.
So I get to Corvettes and I'm reading down and and I come to an ad that says this, "Corvette 1992 Callaway, blk/blk, 6-spd, chrome wheels, 59 k, beaut., $17,900." I remember from somewhere that Callaway tunes Corvettes so I call the guy and drive for an hour to see this thing. It's black, and lowered, and has black mufflers and pipes, and this engine that says Callaway 435 SuperNatural. I take it out to highway 50, drive up and down and the thing is WAY faster than my '89. It looks cooler nd handles better and I really liked it a lot.
My plan was to go back to the guy's house and say something like, "Oh, it's OK but the ZF in my car shifts better." As expected, he says, "Howja like it?" Unexpectedly and instead of my planned dismissive response, my mouth, on it's own and disobeying what passes for my brain, simply says, "I'll buy it."
You folks can help me.
1 - Just what did I buy?
2 - Will my kid be as mad as my wife is, now that we own two Corvettes?
Sounds like a good deal for a '92 SuperNatural in nice condition. You could ask a couple of people hear for things to look out for.
There is Callaway95 who owns a Supernatural 450 I believe.
Also, Stan A who used to run the Callaway registry. I think he's more into the Twin Turbo cars but may be able to give you some tips on the SN.
Congrats on your good fortune... sounds like a great purchase. Why would your son be mad? If he's the car guy he'll love it! Besides, now he can talk you into giving him your '89 when he's old enough to drive!
sounds like a nice deal...... one way to figure out it's value it to determine what a similar '92 w/59K mile vette is worth. Then add some % of the cost of the callaway motor.
The Callaway motor option (SN 435) probably ran around $13K.
Thanks to everyone for commenting. As I looked at some of the pictures of various Callaway mods that callaway95 has in pictures on his site, I realize that it's possible that the original owner may only have had one Callaway mod added to this otherwise Plain-Jane '92 ... the motor. I'd have to expect that Callaway would have tried to persuade him to put in a heavier clutch, and brakes, etc., but when I looked again today, there were the regular non-C45 stock brakes in the front. I understand that Callaway maintains records of their work on various vehicles and can let you know what was done to each one if you give them the VIN. I'll try it tommorrow to get the scoop on what, if anything else, was done to it.
Is it even legitimate to call a car with only perhaps one mod, a Callaway? I'd hate to be so presumptuous and have someone with an Aerobody call me a lightweight.
Still, there is this irritating little neighbourhood dork in a grey-primed Mustang who needs to learn a little respect and that SuperNatural 435 could probably help in the lesson ~~ Oxo.
Don't be put off because the car does not have the Aerobody. Most Twin Turbo cars and SuperNaturals do not have it. It's another 15K minimum to add the body.
As Callaway95 stated the SuperNatural engine is about a 13K package.
Here is a link to a stock bodied '95 SN on Callaway's website. It does have
Coil Over suspension, Brembos and a 5pt roll bar... but it's also 39.5K. http://callawaycars.com/Carsforsale/frank.htm
Sounds like you got a good price on the car for the mileage. Contacting Callaway with your Vin number will confirm the package installation. Also, ask them for a copy of the installation package report. This will show all changes made to the car and upgrades.
As several people have said, it is still a Callaway even if its does not support a aero body package. Its the engine that counts!
