The car starts fine until it warms up and then stalls. Next time it will not start until several tries and then the "check engine" light comes on but the car runs fine and the cycle starts all over again. I had the code checked and it was code 36. Coil has been replaced and same issue. Please help !
DTC 36 is faulty high resolution pulse or extra low resolution pulse detected. The referance signals toggle between 0 and 5 volts as the camshaft turns. Therefore, an open,a short to voltage,a short to ground , or a defective sensor inside the distributor can prevent the voltage from pulsing at the EMC. Took this right out of the book, it's all Greek to me. Sounds like the opti is on the way out.
So, should I replace the distributor and the water pump, since it needs to removed to get to the distributor. What brand should I use for both and how much do they cost ?
Thanks,
Bobby
You did not say what mileage is on your car, however, the added expensive of a water pump is well worth the investment. If you just do the opti, and the pump fails a month later, chances are it will take out the new opti. I don't know what brand to recommend. I'm sure someone will tune in on that question.

I'd go with a new OEM water pump. It will come with a new thermostat already installed in it, so you won't need to buy one of those, unless you want a different temp 'stat.
For the Opti, I'd go with either a fresh OEM unit, or the DynaSpark if you'd rather go with the best you can get.
Also consider swapping all coolant hoses, plug wires and the serpentine belt while you're in there, unless they're fresh. There'll never be an easier time to do them than while you've got it pulled down as far as is required to get to the Opti.
I need a good mechanic in Austin, TX to do all this work, and won't rip me off. (I will buy the parts and just need him to install all - optispark, waterpump, hoses, wires, plugs etc...)
First check the connections at the opti. Make sure they are good, clean, and tight and a FSM will help with the voltage readings for testing purposes. After you do this disconnect the battery for ~30 sec and then reconnect and start the engine. If the code reapears then you know the optispark is toast.
