Default Bracket for Radar Detector

I was in the process of making a bracket for my radar detector when I saw a post on the same subject....

Just wanted to share my pictures....

.

.

.

I am going to paint it black. Should Look better.

I also need to wire it, but I am not sure how? Any suggestions?

It works great for the Bel....

Glenn

Can you give more specific info on how you made it?
What parts did you use? Anything else that might be helpful?
Looks like a great idea that can be adapted to any detector.

Glenn,

First you have to get into the mirror. Underneath are the two lights. Take these out.

Now pop out the glass part of the mirror. It is in a little frame. The frame is what separates from the housing. Don't worry if the glass and the frame separate. The glas is sandwhiched, not attached.

The switch in the mirror is mounted to one of the lights. It is a double pole double throw switch. If you don't know what that means, it's OK.The back of the switch, has 12v+ and 12V- on the two poles. Use a volt meter to test.

I also tested the output of the lighter adapter to determine where the + and - 12 volts were fed.

Then I took the RJ11 phone cord supplied with my Valantine and cut it longer than I needed. I stripped the two wires I needed and put a nice thin coat of solder on them to make the tips solid.

Then I routed the wire where the other wires enter the mirror. Now you will know why you need to pop off the glass frame part. It is impossible to snake the wire through without removing the glass.

I just pinched the soldered ends between the existing lug and prong on the switch. I broke the delicate wire tips several times and had to restrip and solder new tips. Give yourself 4-5 inches of extra slack on the wire when you start.

Then just snap it back together.

Right now the one I use is wireless. :yesnod: I like the bracket and I think I will make one for mine like that. Currently I use the suction cups but when you remove it from the windshield it leaves 2 round marks that is hard to get off.

Glenn,

Yes, I did post this about a month ago. I actually ripped the thing apart last night and took the pictures for you. It was a nice distraction from the attack.

Glen, if you have a long piece of wire and you don't want to mess with the mirror, you can run it from the accesory plug in the center console. I ran mine under the console, behind the drivers seat, under the sill, up behind the left windshield trim and across the top to come out by the mirror. :yesnod:

I kind of like the idea of getting the power from the mirror, but I'd probably use wire taps. I am wondering though, you wired this direct, you didn't use the V1 power module, or did you fit it in there? Only disadvantage going that way I see, would be if you wired to the console, it would be easier to add the option remote display. Since I've already hard wired the power module behind the cig. lighter I'd probably just route a wire up to it.
