I suppose some of it depends on the situation, but how many miles can your vette get when the gas gauge switches to the reserve reading?
Yesterday I got to 5 before pulling into the gas station.
I ran out of gas at either 11 or 14 one time. I let it sit for a minute and was able to start it back up and coast to a station close by.
There reserve tank will take all the way to where you start walking to the gas station . Sorry. I'm not sure myself. But this sure is something we all should know. But personally, I dont let my tank go under 1/4.

My reserve light went on last night as I was driving to the gas station. The car took 17.05 gallons; capacity per the owners manual is 20 gallons. Figuring a conservative average of 15 mpg that would give me a range of 45 miles. But I don't think I'd chance it.

I agree. Plus you end up with all the "gunk" on the bottom of the tank in your fuel lines.
Save The Wave, Don
Mine hits reserve when it says I have around 85-95 miles left. I have driven it past that point several times, once when I was down to less than 15. Mine also goes to low range when it gets way down and doesn't display miles left any more. Funny thing is, with less than 60 or so miles left, it only takes about 15.5 gallons.
My tank runs dry on the 7th reserve mile. Once it reaches 7 miles on reserve...."cough"...silence.
The only thing I don't get is from reserve mile 1 to reserve mile 7 is not really 7 miles. It is more like 4, the gauge just drops at that rate so I have to watch it when I get that low.
I dont let mine get to reserve because of all the gunk at the bottom of the tank. Its not worth those few extra miles to risk a fuel pump or perhaps something worse.
Why run it in reserve when there is a gas station on every corner? Not good for the pump as the fuel in the tank is cooling it down when running. Doesn't make any sense to me???? Buy some gas and save your pump. Pretty simple.....
The reserve tank actually starts at the half full mark. Haven't you noticed? It stays on full for days. Then once it gets under 1/2 it evaporates. Same people who designed the tachometer must have worked on the gas gauge.

As long as I keep my tank full, it does't use any gas.

So the pickup isnt on the bottom of the tank when it is full ????
It is harder on the pump I heard though,,, at least in my SIlverado I was told the fuel helps cool the pump.... I dont know if the same applies to a Vette or not,,,,, but I would think so.
If you let the reserve light come on you are taking a risk. Ask my wife about this, she found out the hard way. Never trust the reserve light and miles to empty. It will get you when you least expect it or at the worst time.
If I hit reserve Im usually looking at a 16 gal fill up. Now, if your car sits a little higher in the rear end that may change things. I once owned a modified camaro that if the tank needle was hitting the empty line, well, it was and you were walking.
