It's getting harder and harder to get into reverse on my '94's 6 speed, particularly at cold startup. I got the car 2 years ago with 19k on it, no particular problem slipping into reverse. Since then, it's gradually become worse. I now have 27 k on it and have recently replaced the fluid with GM-spec stuff. That made no difference. There is no noise or gear-grinding associated with the problem, it's just damn hard to push the stick back, to the point where it sometimes takes one hand to pull up the release and one to push the lever back. Makes no sense to me. Operates smoothly in all other gears. Any ideas? Happen to anyone?
Thanks for your time and interest.

Re: REVERSE GEAR PLAYING HARD TO GET!!!!!!!!!! (dadlad)
Try this.
Dead stop put in neutral then let off the clutch then depress the clutch and go to 1st gear (keep car still) then reverse. Hope this helps.
Re: REVERSE GEAR PLAYING HARD TO GET!!!!!!!!!! (dadlad)
I don't believe reverse is constant mesh, so if you push the clutch in and don't wait long enough for the counter shaft to slow down and stop, then reverse is going to resist engaging. If you are in a forward gear and push the clutch in , then you will be able to shift into reverse because the countershaft will be stopped ( if the car is not in motion).
Re: REVERSE GEAR PLAYING HARD TO GET!!!!!!!!!! (jfb)
Reverse gear on the ZF6 is synchronized (same as "constant mesh" right?).
This is probably a different problem, but I've always had a gear clash issue trying to go into reverse. Sometimes it would only go halfway resulting in some nice grinding sounds. I usually shift into a forward gear first, then reverse...or shift into reverse twice, to get the gears all aligned. Also I put pressure on the shifter while letting out the clutch so it will pop into gear if not fully engaged. Haven't grinded a gear since

Thanks for your input!
For what it's worth, I found through trial and error that when you shift into reverse, you don't have to continually hold up the release sleeve. (I know, most of you knew that already, but I didn't.) In other words, you pull it up, move the shift lever rearward until resistance is felt, let go of the release sleeve and shift the rest of the way. Sounds dumb, but it is definitely easier when you have a balky reverse like mine.
Cheers to all,

If the gears are in constant mesh, then any grinding you hear is not the gears, but rather the synchronizer rings grinding against the shift collar. Not nice
