Wheel Offset Inquiry
I know the offset is 36mm on the 8.5" (or 38mm for 9.5") rims for my '86, but I'd like to put on 17's that are 56mm offset. Are wheel spacers available that will allow this fitment?

Yes. I believe you'd need a 1" adapter. But most people would recommend buying 17" wheels with the correct offset.
As long as you get a good, strong billet adapter, you could go the stock wheel route -- if that's what you really want.

I believe its a 3/4" adapter plate you'll need. I would recommend getting the correct offset rims if you find something you like.
