Car won't start.....
Won't start. No clicking sound or anything when trying to start it, but the dash lights come on....they do seem a little dim, but I dunno if it's abnormal so to say. Software I have's tellin me it's most likely a bad solenoid and undoubtedly a case where I'd need to replace the starter too. Slight possibility could be my battery cables are corroded. This wouldn't be the first time.
I plan on trying to clean the cables/terminal contacts first tomorrow afternoon, but I wanted to get anyone else's opinion first as to what they think the problem could be. Also, whats it run typically for a new starter/solenoid and labor involved? I'm guessin around 300, but I never had it done before or priced it really. TiA
When you turn the key to the on position what is your battery voltage reading? Possible low battery, bad connections, or VATS problem. some further diagnostics are in order before replacing the starter IMO.

I have had a starter go south and figured it was a battery or solenoid. First indicators was a dragging start. Cleaned the terms and whacked the solenoid and all was well. Then the problem reoccurred. Battery voltage was pulling down hard so it was replaced as the age was beyond 3 years. Problem reoccurred again but this time the starter was grinding. Pulled the starter apart and discovered the brushes were worn down to nothing.

Unfortunately the brush holders were destroyed so the unit was shelved. Picked up one of the liteweight units for a good price. Shaved off about ten pounds!
Just a question, JRC: when you say "lightened", do you mean the outside shell was lighter in weight, or the guts? My guess is both, which may mean less material inside, as in less windings, etc. Please enlighten me a bit more...
