Does adding an air intake filter kit increase the sound when accelerating (like on the older cars when guys would flip the round air cleaner lid over)?

Normally it does increase it. Most airboxes have some restrictive baffling in them to meet noise standards, they really serve no other function.

Generally yes, you'll hear the intake sucking

Can the baffles be remove on a stock air box to increase performance/sound?

Yes to remove, no to more performance/sound. Cutting the air cleaner lid open would make more sound, also sticking a filter on the TB would as well, but that may be bad for sucking in hot air. The full A/O intake kit has a quite a bit of sound.

Yes, cut a big square hole in the filter lid to expose the filter.
Its not quite as loud, and still benefits 5-10hp on an L98.

So if I cut a hole in the lid of my 95, it wouldnt make the engine sound any more beefy, you would just hear a sucking sound?

huh. I wonder if that would be at all worth it. I prefer roar, not whoosh.

Then change to a K&N filter. No, it will not add 20 hp, but sounds more like what you are describing. I went to K&N for just that reason.

You actually found a noticeable change in sound?

Yup! Especially when it sucked in the neighbors cat.
I am not running cut lid, just the K&N and at WOT it is very audible.

Coming from someone thats always used K&N and aftermarket boxes Id just cut the stock lid, keep a paper filter and call it a day. It will run the same IMO and save you money.

i had the k&n + home-cut stock lid gig, then threw it in the basement in a pile of other junk.

I'm gonna get a Claw for mine. I know the performance gains are crap, but I want it for the sounds, and I think that it + smooth ducts would look nice in there

Aaah but when you say "run" do you mean "sound"? Im not looking for hp gains, just the cool-sounding-factor.

When I purchased my 96 LT1 it came with a 3 filter SLP cold air induction kit in place of the factory airbox. About a month after purchasing the car, I replaced it with a factory airbox with the K&N air filter. I did not notice much of a horsepower difference between the two but the car was louder in the engine compartment with the SLP kit. Both intakes sound good but the SLP definately gives the car a little more attitude.
