I'm interested in putting in a remote start up. Any brands? cost? experiences?
At work there was a 02 SS camaro that was heavily modified and then it fired up while I was next to it. I jumped and had that "Holy cow!" look. The owner was two spaces away with a smile. Granted the SS had a lopey came and was putting out 515rwhp and no freakin mufflers. It was still a cool concept!
I would like to have it on the car for two reasons
1. See the above SS camaro
2. Would be great for when I leave work tired. (start it up as I walk to it then just get in and go)
What's your view/opinions on the subject at hand? And dont forget the products if you have any u like.
I have an AstroStart on my Subaru mainly for winter. It works great and was fairly inexpensive. IIRC, it was $345 installed, and took the shop about 2 hours to install. IMO, this is a very good investment to have. I'm not sure where you are located, but it works great in winter for getting the heat pumping before you head out to the car, and to get the AC going for the same reason in the summer. The other feature I liked with the AstoStart was that it had all the other features as my OE remote for keyless entry and the like. So you only have one remote to lug around. I am sure more are offering that option now, but when mine was installed it was the cheapest and best rated one with the most features. You can also get them will full alarm systems as well.

I group these devices in with remote window openers: like, what's the point?
You still have to insert the ignition key and turn it, do you not...to unlock the steering and the auto trans???
It might be good for startling passers-by, but for little else.

I had Auto Start on my Lincolns when I owned a Limousine Service. It's a cool concept but it won't turn on the Accessories so thinking you'll jump into a warmed up car with the heater blowing is not going to happen. And if you have VATS - you'll have to disable it in order to have Remote Start. Many Alarm Systems have this feature and the alarms I had were purchased on EBay for about $50. My step father installed them for free (he installs breathalizers in cars).
I had BestBuy install an after market alarm...keyless entry, hatch etc.
4-5 years ago...very happy with it, it's an AVITAL model 2200, some of the options (which I didn't get) were remote windows and start, if I remember right it wasn't all that expensive..250-300. Those guys were great and very professional. Since I didn't get those options I don't know what the additional cost would have been.
you have to put the key in and turn it to 'ON' and push the brake, or it will cut off.
Almost right - you do have to turn the key to the on position (you do want to steer, right?). If you touch the brake without turning the key to on, the car will die.
The company I used exclusively in the mid to late 90's was Hellfire electronics. They were great. I probably installed a couple hundred of them. Many, many more of their alarms and keyless entry's. Never once had a quality issue. I wonder if they are still around. The parent company was Harrison electronics.

I have a code alarm remote start on my 01 dodge truck and all my accessories work just fine. Summer time the trucks nice and cool, winter time trucks nice and warm.
I had it on my 1997 Chevrolet Truck Limo & I have it on my 2001 Chevy 2500HD truck & it's great. I know it may sound silly to some, until you get used to it and it really grows on you. I am going to put it on my Vette soon because it is a 90 and has no remote lock/unlock - I really miss the convenience of that.
The unit on my truck is a Viper and it works really well. I'll go with that brand on my Vette also!
