Finally, I have found my vette. It took me three years, but it was worth it. I was directed to this site by a guy from work and he said this was the best place to get info. I have been mainly a Camaro owner with a 454 SS pickup truck, that got me into a lot of trouble, and my first car a 85 monte SS. I know those cars pretty well, but a vette is a whole other animal. Expensive to fix, but I don't care. I have had it at a mechanics shop for a month. For the usuall, brakes, rotors, grease job and oil change and he noticed that the antifreeze was dark brown. He did 6 or 7 flushes and even bought a chemical to run through the block to clean out the rust. But alas, it did not work. The guy I bought the car from said he had it sitting for a bout two years, but with this kind of neglect to the Vette is unforgivable. My baby either needs to have a rebuild or a new engine. I figured I would just get a new one, but I don't know if I want to keep the crossfire to put on the new engine or not. My friend at work said I could get a good price for the old engine if I wanted to sell it. I'm not sure if I want to sell, I have always wanted to tear apart an engine and put it back together, but with two kids and no garage, that dream may have to wait. Sorry so long winded. Anyone got any suggetstions?
I bought my 84 in January been working out the little problems since then. I was thinking the same thing about my motor, I wonder if anyone on the forum has ever change their crossfire out to another motor ? I seen something on the Speed Channel once they had an 84 they were going to do this and that to it to upgrade it in the end they just put an crate motor and heads on it and kept the rest original?

How many miles on the motor and how does it run?Ive seen these cars with 150K+ and they still ran fine,as far as the flush goes, cant explain that, sooner or later it would have to clean up if there isnt anything adding to the discolor.Id try taking it somewhere else.

Woo hoo! Another West Michigander. There are several of us who get together in the area. Go to the Events and Regional section and then to Great Lakes. You will see posts from the West Michigan crew from time to time. The guys and gals there have lots of experience and will be happy to help you out.
It only has 77,500 miles on it. I have not had any problems with the mechanic. He can figure out things nobody can seem to fix. It runs pretty rough. I have to hold the gas pedel down for about 30 seconds otherwise it will die on me. I am contemplating pulling the gas tank and having it cleaned or replaced. When I got it, we had to go through the two year old gas, so I think maybe that has put some gunk in it. I prefer the crossfire to the tuneport. I just like the meaner sound to the crossfire is all. It also needs new exhaust, which will help it out along with a new air filter. It is on order right know. But one thing at a time. After the air filter, I need to replace the starter, too. I got the car for a good price and expected to put money into it, but with Christmas and a three year olds birthday just around the corner, the car will have to wait a little bit. In January I want to do the exhaust. I am checking out some flowmaster systems for it with headers. This spring I am hoping to get it repainted. I am thinking I will do a fade that is black an silver. I cannot decide which one I want. A friend of my husband and I is rebuilding a mach mustang, and was considering this paint. I plan to do it myself though. Put my time at body school to work. I am a little concerned about how it handles. The steering wheel feels like you have manual steering. I test drove an 89 and it was not that tight.

Welcome aboard and I'm sorry to hear that your initial experience to the world of Corvettes is not starting well. Exactly what is the problem though? Has the cooling system neglect caused a problem such as leaking compression into the cooling system or something such? Obviously you already know that such neglect can cause serious problems. But if there's no compression leaking into the system, water in the oil, etc., a rebuild should not be needed if the engine is otherwise sound. If it's only contaminated at this point and seven flushes haven't cleaned it yet, I must wonder about his methods. If you were closer, I'm sure we could figure this thing out and fix it. Anyway, I like and admire your style and drive. With few exceptions, you'll find that your Corvette is not really that much different from your previous GM muscle from a basic mechanical standpoint. It just has a bigger factor! Stick around, there are a ton of good folks here glad to help in anyway they can.
Thanks for all the warm welcomes. It is a little confusing, but I will get the hang of it soon. I have replaced the valve covers and gaskets on the car, but still detect the smell of burning oil and this was done a month ago. I do not see any leakage, at least from the top of the block, do not have a lift to look under it and working 50+ hours doesn't leave a lot of time to check out my car like I want to. Plus it is really cold out know, no insulation when you are 5' 4 and 109 lbs. I figure I will replace the starter, get new exhaust and a brand new air filter and drive it through the winter and see what happens. It sat for a while and it may need to be cleaned out by everyday driving. I do not mind putting the money into my car, but with Christmas and a 3-year-olds birthday around the corner, money is at a premium.
I would appreciate the mentorship of Deb, corvetteronw. I think it is already to late for me on the speeding part. The only way I drive is ***** to the walls and don't stop until you run out of gas or tires. Yes my name was supposed to be burninrubberchick, but for some reason my computer left out the 'n'. Well it is winter now, so it fits at the moment.
I will post some pictures as soon as I figure out how to work the camera. It is one of those two in ones, takes pictures and video. Then after I figure that out, I need to figure out how to transfer them to my computer. Got a lot goin on, but I will get them on. It is in rough shape, but not a bad car for $4450.00. Have a good night everyone, 4 am comes early.
