Well I got my two gears today. Let's see if I can follow simple instructions. I transferred the above magazine article to a Word document. Let me know if any of you would like the file for your own purposes. I'll email it to you.
Check the C-4 TechTips Section on this Forum for repair articles, too. Take your time. Not a hard job. If you can repair a clutch, you can do headlight bushings no problem.
That article that found and transferred to this thread is ok for reference BUT Heed the following
On mine, There are 4 nuts and 2 Screws that hold the entire Headlight Frame onto the Hood. The article gets into all this detail about taking off this and that..........
......Just unhook the two Plugs (1 for the motor and 2 for the Headlight) Then advance the headlight so that it is open about halfway. remove the two Torx screws then the two Phillips screws and take off the Bezel. Then take off the bracket mentioned in the article
Then take off the 4 nuts and two screws with a 10mm and pull the entire Headlight assembly and place on your bench......MUCH EASIER!! This Headlight removal should only take 10 minutes tops.
Once on the bench take the motor loose from the Headlight assembly and place it aside. (I sound like Emeril) Take the 6-7 Phillips screws out of the motor and pry that sucker open.
Once the inside is repaired the reverse of the above is just as simple and should only take 10 minutes.
The Motor itself, once opened, the larger white gear was stripped. I just popped the new in place and put it back together.
Anyway, this job was in no way worth two weeks of procrastination over.
I had the same thing happen to my 86 and I replaced the bushings (with brass bushings). No more problems. The instructions given here are the way to go. It is easier that you think. Good luck.

The 84-87 don't have bushings, just nylon gears that can wear out. They changed the design in 88 due to issues with the gears. The 88-96 are the only ones to have bushings. My 86 just started winking as well and I thought it was the bushings only to find out that mine doesn't have bushings. I'm going to the store this afternoon to return the bushings and buy the replacement gears.
I do know that you can buy brass gears instead of the OEM nylon gears for the 84-87, but it's $100 vs. $35 for both gears.
