You take the hush panel off. Then you disconnect the two connecters and the plugs from the computer. Then there are two screws that hold the computer in place. Remove the screws and it should slide out. Once you have the computer out, there is a litte cover on one side with two screws holding it on. Remove the door and you will see the chip. Pull it out and put in the new one and reverse the process.
Thats just off the top of my head, you will get a better description from a haynes manual or a shop manaul.
I agree on getting the ECM module dropped down below the dash but I never unplug it.
Rather I have the new CalPac next to me, remove the little cover plate from the ECM panel, depress the two levers to realease the CalPac, remove the stock CalPac, carefully press the new CalPac into place until the locking levers engage it, replace the cover plate and install the ECM and hush panel.
BTW, once the ECM is "open" do NOT move around on the carpet, simply touch the metal case to discharge any static electricity before opening the access panel.
with the above. Three philips head screws to get the hush panel down and disconnect pass floor light. Use a 3/8" ratchet, 6" extention, and a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the two bolts holding the ECM in place. Use a 1/4" ratchet and 1/4" socket to remove the two screws on the chip cover and you may have to pry the cover loose with a small flathead screwdriver. You will see the chip and press the blue and white tabs down on the side to release the chip. Install in reverse.
Would these instructions be the same for a 90 Vette as well? I've always thought about getting one of these chips too. Thanks for the advice.
I instaled the Hypertech power chip several years ago on my '91 and the install is the small for a '90.
I just checked on their website www.hypertech.com and they have the step by step instructions. Once, on the instructuions page click on Power Chip Adapter for GM Vehicles (code on installations is G3). You can print it out/save it.
Thanks for the input on the Hypertech chip install. I saved the G3 Installation instructions for future reference. Looks very simple to do, thanks.
Except for the part where you stick your head down into the footwell, looking up towards the end of the computer. Your feet are sticking up the air against the headreat on the passger seat. The two 10mm bolts on either side of the computer are easy enough to take off, with a small flashlight in your mouth so you can see the heads of the bolts. Then when the two bolts are out, the computer comes down and hits you in the head. You try and hold the computer in one hand so it doesn't drop to the floor (although the wiring harness would actually stop it from falling all the way down) while screwing your body around and out the door. Have done that a few times with the power chip I got from California. Didn't work well the first time so had to put the OEM chip back in and send the programmed chip back, then got the Calif chip back again and back down into the foot well I went. Got pretty good at it.
thanks guys I got it in, but I didnt really notice anything. I feels like its shifting later and alittle harder.
Most of them are designed only to work at full throttle. If you foot's not right down to the floor, everything should be the same. Once full throttle is detected, air/fuel/timing is optimized for peak performance. I noticed a big difference when I hit passing gear or jumped hard on it from a dead stop.
thanks guys I got it in, but I didnt really notice anything. I feels like its shifting later and alittle harder.
I installed mine about 8 years ago in my '91 and the AT shifts into fourth gear about 44 mph under normal acceleration rather than 40 mph. Before the install the AT on 35 and 40 mph posted limits would be shifting up and down, at 44 into high gear it's much more pleasing to drive. And that's probably what I would say to be the greatest benefit of the chip. And I think you will see the fan(s) turn on a bit earlier than before also.
Maybe a little bit of increased performance, but you are right not real evident.
I don't believe this was mentioned, but make sure you disconnect the battery before doing anything like this.
**** yeah, without question !!
Id be suprized if you notice anything at all with a Hypertech chip, torque converter lockup and fan temps will probably be the biggest change there. I doubt youll get much more, if any more power from it.
