Default Differences in Spoiler Mounting

Both my son and I have 96 LT1 coupes with auto trans.

With the exceptions of color and a few different accessories, they look identical, except for the front, three-piece spoliers.

Yep, we both have three piece spoilers, but mine has a brace on the center spoiler and my son's doesn't.

I know it's a factory piece because I found the identical brace for sale at gmpartsdirect.com.

Do many of you guys' cars have this brace? Why do some have it and others don't?

Just wondering.

That was only installed as an RPO 55 for the high speed air dam option. It is to keep the center air dam from folding down at high speed. It came standard with the Z07 option and on verts with the wind deflectors on the mirrors.

Thanks for letting me know; I didn't realize there was an air dam option.

I just ordered a replacement air dam for my 96 (the one with the brace) and now I'm not sure I ordered the correct replacement. I'll have to check the Eckler's, Mid-Amerca and Corvette Central web sites to see if they offer a high speed air dam.

Well, I checked all three of the sites and none showed a high speed air dam. Just a three piece kit and each part sold separately.

I then went to Corvette Action Center and the Gran Sport Registry and looked at all the RPO codes listed. Couldn't fine a RPO 55, even though I scanned through the entire listing of RPO codes.

I did find that there were only 143 cars made in my color combination; for whatever that's worth.

Could the high speed air dam be part of a package, like RPO Z51, because I couldn't find it as a stand alone option.

One other, does it differ from the standard air dam/spoiler?

Thanks for the help.

My 96 has a J55 RPO code, but that translates to High Performance Brake Package.

I checked several other RPO sites and couldn't find any code that identifies the air dam center brace as an option. So now all I'll have to do is await the delivery of my new three piece dam kit and see if it'll fit properly.

BTW, I didn't realize you were joking, but I should have guessed you were when I saw the "wind deflectors on the mirrors" part.

Perhaps the correct question is... why did your's not have one, and how did you steal it off your son's car without him knowing? Thus you feel guilty and want to replace it now

j/k

I need to get my front air dam replace, the middle is completely gone

Well, I installed the new air dam/spoiler yesterday and it went on smooth as silk.

The center piece had a pre-drilled hole for the brace and everything else aligned correctly.

I can only think now that my son's was damaged sometime earlier in the car's life and never replaced.

Thanks for all the info.

I'm not sure, but I thought that the Z51 suspended cars came with the smaller spoiler to maximize ground clearance. I just ordered one from CC and while researching the correct part, I saw some statements to that effect...

I just tried to find what you referenced on Corvette Central but no good. If you could post the link I'd appreciate it.
