This is pretty wild! I'm drinin' anround in my '94 vert yesterday, OAT is 60+ and I'm watching my coolant temp gradually rise to about 250 on the gauge. WOW, scary!! The other odd thing; the fans didn't come on until it got around that same temp! I hurry home, keep it running in the garage and use my infrared thermometer to verrify the temp.
The thermometer could not fine a temp above 200-205 anywhere, on the intake near the thermostat housing or return hose to the rad. The engine wasn't showing any other indications of overheating (rough idle, acceleration).
I've seen this happen one other time, but mostly the indication is normal about 190-200.
Is this a bad temp sensor? I can't see that it's the 'stat because of the manual temp indications.
Which coolant temp guage were you looking at....digital or analog? Both temps come from different sensors/senders. One in the head (analog) and one in the waterpump (digital).
Press the gauges button till coolant temp comes up in the center of the dash. I usually find I have to bleed my system several times to get all the air out after working on it.
You can use the guages button to scroll through the oil temp, coolant temp, ect. It will display where the mileage shows.
On my 95 I never rely on the analog guage. The needle might be in the hash marks, but the digital guage will show 200*. Next time watch the digital when the analog is showing hot.
Thanks for this info. I've had my 'vette for about 6 weeks and still learnin'.
There hasn't been a whole lot of good cruisin' weather here. It sucks getting a new toy this time of year.
These cars are a different animal. I like the red vert.
Also the fans will come on when the A/C is turned on. The PCM controls the on/off temps for the fans. Usually 227* they will come on and 217* they will go off. Good idea to let it idle while you observe the on/off temps.
