If you are talking about the hypertech chip/prgrammer from MAD vette. Its worthless. Any chip that is not CUSTOM to your car is a waste of time. It will kick on the fans earlier make it run cooler but thats about it. pcmforless.com Alvin is the one that is reccomended on here.

Its not Alvin, its Bryan for the 94-96 cars.
FC, if youre talking about a piggy back device, i agree with the post above, its a stupid idea considering your car has a reprogrammable chip, and wont get you much if anything at all. If youre talking about a programmer that connects to the ALDL to modify the tune and flash the chip, this is a different kettle of fish and depending on your intended use for the device it may or may not be worth it.
If youre planning on changing rear end ratios, you can use the programmer to change the settings for the speedo calibration, and youll also need to adjust the shift points for your automatic transmission. The programmer will come in handy for this task.
(the ECM comands the transmission in your car to shift based on a TPS % Vs a MPH figure for each gear, as well as for TCC lock up. If you were to change the rear gears to the 3.73:1 you would like to, the car would then shift very late due to the fact its governed by the vehicle speed, and not the engine RPM)
Im tring to pick up a few hp anyway possible. Im going to be adding the 1.6 rockers this week and a trans go shift kit. I wanna pick up my hp numbers alittle more. Im tring to find a quick fix for my need for speed.
Thanks for tuning in

If these are the only mods you have, you don't need anything but your stock chip. Once you get into heads, cam, intake, & exhaust work then you will need a CUSTOM chip made for your car only. I had ski_dwn_it burn me a chip with tremendous success.

You CANT replace the chip in a 96 without replacing the complete ECM. The chip is NOT socketed and doesnt come out. You DONT burn a new chip for a 96.
You dont need anything but the stock chip anyway. It can be reprogrammed as many times as you like.
No generic chip is going to help you. 96 has a PCM, it is to be connected with a laptop or programmer and reflashed, no chip, but it all is the same concept.
Custom chips/flashes are the ONLY way that is even remotely worth the money, and EVEN THEN i would not do it until I was completely done with modifications to the car for a very long time.
Still, chips/reflashes do not magically free 20hp like the advertisements say, not until you've made significant changes to the engine, like heads/cam/intake system (even then they may only free 10ish). The only reason I would actually have one done is after the cam is changed, because then a new chip is necessary.
For you, i see you are thinking of gears also, in which case a slight reprogramming of the PCM will be needed for the speedo, and some changes to the shift points of an automatic do make it feel better. However, I dont think its worth the expense to have a full tuning job done. Hypercrap can do these, which is its only good point. If its relatively cheap it might be worth it just for those. Do NOT expect power gains from it if you do though.
