Default that was fun

I just finished changing my right rear wheel bearing. someone said they did it without removing the halfshaft there was no way I could break the T55 torx bolts loose. I removed the shaft, that was a job in itself. I had to remove the lower camber rod on one end to be able to get it out. looking at the factory bearing there was a dust seal on the inside and the replacement bearing did not have one. so it's 10:00 pm no parts store open so I have to figure a way to save the old seal. took it to the press and worked about 35 mins to get the old bearing apart so I could save the seal. and I did save it. go to put it on the new bearing and it was a different diameter looks like the replacement bearing has it's own type of seal. it's all back together and on the road again

Frustrating, all the way to the bank. Nicely done.

Yup, just drop the new one in. Threw me off too, looked different. What pizzed me off is they should include a new thrust (!wording?) washer as they are usually worn. Put my old one back in, seems Ok.

Default Never again

Doing both sides on my 84 vette. What a pain, had to drop the half shaft as well it was tight getting it out, so I'm replacing the u joints for grins and giggles, and what the heck since I'm only slightly frustrated I'm going to replace the bushings on the camber bar, and the control rods too. I have off from work all next week so I know what I'll be doing. Oh yeah forgot to mention I have an exhaust system to add into the mix, cat and everything behind it. I probably should just replace the u joints on the drive shaft too.

Busy, busy, busy

I need a beer

Default Oh Yeah

Yeah I did get new brake pads, the rotors were in great shape. I figure that i only (hopefully) want to go under the car once. It sat for the last14 years with very little use. When I bought it (in Oct. 06) I changed all the fluids put Bilstein's on four corners, tune up, cleaned the TB's and adjusted them, still a little shake at idle and an extreme slight hesitation (almost not noticable).
My first vette so I'm learning.

I've never removed a half shaft to change a rear wheel bearing. With a good Snap on torque bit and some good "mechanical sensitivity" it can be done. I suppose it's only a matter of time before I end up with a C4 that I just can't get the T55 bits out and I have to remove the half shafts. Luckily I just changed my rear wheel bearings last summer as I'm sure I just jinxed myself with this post

You can do them with the halfshafts in, just turn them a bit to get to the T55s. Its a pain, but did both sides that way.

A lot of times it helps to heat the bolts with a small torch and loosen the locktite (or rust) that binds the bolts. I have found there are dissimilar metals used on the Vette that unless antiseize lubricant is used will definitely fuse together. Heating the treads or whatever is accessible will make the job alot less frustrating. A good looking assistant and cool adult beverages to reward yourself help too.

I did both sides about a year ago, talk about a pile of tools for the job. The left side I got removed fairly easy just sheared two snap-on 1/2" extensions so I had to go to 3/4" to get the 36mm nut off, I then go over to the right side and that is when the black cloud of doom showed up, stripped the head of the last torx bolt, had to remove the entire assembly and had to take it in to work to put it on the miller to mill down the bolt head and too top it off GM does not sell that bolt anymore got the longer one and had to grind it down (I love having a mcahine shop at work). After all this got the car all back together. What a fiasco.
