Default HELP, front upper control arm

Just installing the last of the poly bushes. Done the left hand upper control arm but there is no torque specified in the manual for the nut on each end. Looks like they were thread locked as well. I know GM sell this as one piece so that probably explains the absence of any torque figures in the workshop manual.

Anyone know what sort of torque I should tighten these to?

Thanks

my 87 fsm shows - 96 ft lbs for the bolt thru the Upper CA to the frame and the knuckle assy to the UCA @ 48 ft lbs.

i'd invest in a fsm

I'm talking about the nuts on either end of the A-arm, not the bols that attach to the frame, as I said the torque for these is not in the manual

There is no specified torque number for that bolt because GM did not intent for you to service the control arm bushings. They want you to buy a complete control arm with bushings and all.

Guldstrand Motorsports and VB&P both use 75 ft. lbs. on theirs.

Others simply tightened the nut untill the control arms would bind, then back off the nut from there untill the bind just goes away. It's best to have the upper ball joint unattached fron the knuckle when doing this so that the traverse spring does not influence the bind feel.

Or just go by feel.

I'll give that a go in the morning

Thats what I was going to do. I'll try the torque setting you suggest and see how they feel.

Thanks

UKZ,

Well I did get lucky, even though I am nothing more than a backyard, to poor to afford a shop, mechanic by necessity, my brother-in-law, very cool guy, did it for me along with the lower ball joints, thats one good thing about this car do-it-yourself thing, if you don't know how or don't have all the tools, we all know someone that can and will assist, just like the guys, and gals at this forum here. In the last couple of months here I have learned so much just by reading other posts and askiing questions that I'm sure have been asked and answered a thousand times before.

I went to a local shop he wouldn't give me a direct quote but did say the shop rate was $90.00 an hour.

This is the first corverre forum i'v been to that owners actually seem to care and share knowledge. Another site, it seemed that no one was willing to share any "secrets" and were tight lipped, not even answering many question.

Thank again for saving me from having to ask the question.
