is this vent there only to allow air to escape and let the door close easier? has anyone blocked it off?? I am in the process of sound deadining and it seems lik you would get a lot of road noise being it goes directly into the wheel well.
The vent, started in '88, works by exhausting air out of the cab due to the low pressure (relative vacuum) created at the door/ body gap caused by the air moving past the gap when the car is in motion. There's a thin rubber valve behind the vent grate that makes it a one-way valve. It also can pass some air if the incomming air from the heater/AC causes enough pressure in the cab or when rapidly closing a door with the windows up. I doubt eliminating it would have any noticiable effect on interior noise since sound is a pressure wave and the valve would block any of significant magnitude.
