I have heard this a million times and while I agree to some degree, it is my belief that if you get hit hard enough where you would need absorption, you might have bigger problems.

True true, and you'd be better off avoiding collisions in the first place by setting your car up to handle better, i.e. not hauling around unnecessary weight.
Moreover, the back of the car looks a lot nicer without the spare tire blocking your rear suspension, and you can get at all that stuff a lot easier if you ever need to work back there.

Ive been thinking about this very topic for a few days now but I am a bit confused
How would a better handling car keep you from getting rear ended at a red light by someone on a cell phone

Because they would see that aluminum rear suspension glistening in the sunlight and be instantly awestruck and slow down to take a look.
I actually have a twin-sized mattress strapped to the back of my vette with bungee cords for crash protection. If I get a flat tire, I can lay the mattress out and take a nap while waiting for the flatbed.
.......Personally I'm not worried about getting rearended because I'm always going faster than the cars behind me.......
I kinda ascribe to that theory but the guy in the big pickup who totaled my 1st '86 GP at an I-state construction stop proves the exception to the theory.
