Default Instrument Cluster Question

I'm thinking of buying a used instrument cluster off ebay to replace mine that is barely readable.

I have a 91 Coupe. The listing says no mileage. Is the odometer external to the instrument cluster. Ie if I replace the cluster with another will it still display the correct mileage?

i BELIEVE THIS IS CORRECT. The mileage, amoung many other functions is controlled by the CCM. Central Control Module. It is located deep in the dash . It houses the mileage, so a new cluster will show the actual mileage. If you changed the CCM, then the mileage would be 0 and can be changed to the correct mileage by a dealer.

I agree with the info you have received so far.

I must replace the cluster in my Z24 Cavalier and must go thru the same procedure as you.

This is what I was told.

If I buy a used cluster I could install it myself but the car would not start until it was "flashed" at a dealer with there computer to reset the mileage etc.

It would not start because the instrument cluster is part of the cars security system (in the Cavalier anyhow) and must be flashed by the dealers computer for the car to recognize the new cluster.

With the Vette having the VATS system I would believe this to be true for the Vette also.

Good Luck.

As long as the cluster is from a 90-91 it should be plug and play. If you use a later model one 92+ you will have to swap the speedo with a90-91 for the ccm to communicate.

A lot of people tend to list interior parts for the 90 up C4's as working in 90 - 96 C4s. While some parts are 90 - 96 many electrical parts are 90 - 91, and 92 - up (not sure about the specifics about the LT1 cars).

Just be sure it's from a 90 or 91.

Well if I am able to get this cluster, which is listed for a 91, I'll come back and let you all know how it worked out.

Was planning to send my cluster out for refurbishment but if I can put in a good working unit and save some cash that would be great.

Thanks for all the advice!
