The ABS does a self check upon each start up. At 4PMH the ABS pump behind the driver's seat in the storage compartment should prime. When the ABS light remains lit, it means there is a problem in the ABS system. By design, your normal braking will still remain fully operational despite a problem with the ABS system.
You need the ABS diagnostic chapter of the GM shop manual.
