How did you get the old plastic layer off of the pieces before spraying?

I really like it. I would like to redo mine in black to get back the shine. How well does it do in filling in some cracks and imperfections. The last owner liked to see how hard he could screw the screws into the plastic so I have small cracks near all the screw holes.
