Default Milage turned back?

I recently went to go look at a bright aqua met. 96 vette with the lt4, I am not going to say where the car was, but the odometer showed the car had 13,xxx miles on it, it was the orignal owner.
My question is, the car looked like it had 50,000+ miles on it due to paint chips, and just the overall car in general. Did this guy switch out the gauges/odometer, is it even possible for him to pull it off, or am I being too picky? I would think the ecu sends the milage to the cluster, it is not stored in the cluster? Just cant get this off my mind, someone is getting screwed.

Run a carfax and see what comes up on it for mileage.

I'd drive it - a 50k car drives differently then a 13k car.
The car should be real tight - he could have swapped out bcm/ecm but i doubt it.

IMO I wouldnt even think about buying the car or even wasting $20 or so on it. Is it possible for this guy to switch them out?

So the cluster wouldnt store the miles? If he switched out the ecu, wouldnt the transponder in the keys not work?

I didnt even want to drive the car, I just looked at it and was shocked as to how a car with that low miles could look so terrible.

The mileage is stored in the CCM, not the ECU/ECM/PCM or cluster.

See that you are new to the forum. You might want to fill out your profile. Where are you from? Not sure that I understand what exactly you are asking for in your post. Seems like you are asking how to change the mileage on a Vette.

CCM and Vats would probably store code.

Default Check windshield and pedal wear...

A low mileage car should have a fairly clean, original windshield with little sandblasting. Also, there shouldn't be alot of wear on the gas or brake pedal and the carpet near the dead pedal shouldn't show much wear. I'm always wary of claimed low-mileage cars, especially Corvettes. My state inspection slips document my Vette's mileage from day one.

I have seen Autocross cars with 25k miles on it and you would swear it had 100k miles on it.
I have a 66k mile car that looks like it has 5k miles on it.
Not all Corvettes are treated equally.

Yes I am new to the forum, and yes I was looking around for a CE vette. I found one, but I was suprised to see how many are not kept up with, hence my reason for posting about the actual milage.

the CCM is the main computer in the later C4s (1990-1996).

A new CCM comes from the parts guy with zero miles... and it has to be programmed with the correct mileage within 100 miles, or it cannot be changed.

As an aside, a CCM isn't cheap. They are several hundred $$$, this is assuming you can find one.

Look to see what kind of tires are on the car and their tread condition. If it really has 13K on the clock, it should still have the original tires and have minimal tread wear.

It had some kind of sumitomo tire's, which I believe is not orignal.

No, those aren't original. But, I replaced my original tires because of age, not mileage.

Will 315's fit on the back the the vette? How about 315-40-18's? The reason I ask is because the car gets no traction right now, so I would get 315-35-17's (or something similar). I also have a set of 2 rear rims, 18x10.5 with 315-40-18 track tires on. I didnt bring the car home yet, if the banks are monday I will pick it up, but I just want to know what I can do with the car..
