The sending unit is on a stem that includes the fuel pump; both are accessable easily through the top of the fuel tank:
-remove the fuel door
-remove the rubber boot
-remove the clamps on the three fuel lines
-open the electrical connector
-remove the ring of screws around the metal flange
-lift the fuel pump & sending unit from the tank

This should answer your fuel sending unit questions...

I had the same problem with my 89 Vette. Got on the forum and Frizlefrak sent me the directions to remove the unit and make the repair. His instruction were right on the money and my fuel gauge now works. As he points out just be careful with the removal and cleaning. Great advise from forum members.

has anybody tried techron fuel additive on the C4 sender to clean it? I know it is recomended by Ford on some senders we are having problems with and it works. also it was a fix for some C5 sender problems.

My gauge would read full until the tank was half full and then it would read properly. A added Techron and it improved it considerable. The car is in storage and I didn't get a chance to add it before I put it away. I'm going to continue to add it this driving season.
