Default a/c, heater problems

i've had this concern for some time now. completely intermittent. sometimes it blows cold when i'm using the heater, sometimes it blows hot when using a/c. the tech said all the vaccum looks fine. can anyone help pinpoint what i can try to specifically look for? i don't think those doors are opening/ closing properly. God bless to all.

I have the electronic HVAC on my '88 and the heat door is controlled by an electric motor.

When I drop the RH hush panel the motor and acutator rod can be seen and I can put my hand onto the actuator rod to see if the motor is moving the door as I change the temp settings.

Or, you can remove the Blower Module (Electronic Air) or Resistor Pod (Manual) from the left side of the Evaporator case (on the Firewall) and look inside to see the door. As someone operates the controls - 60 to 90 or cold to hot - the door should move. If not, or if you can get the door to flop around while pushing on it with a screwdriver, you'll then need to access it from the passenger's compartment. Most find it helpful to remove the ECM too. On Electronic Air, the motor that controls it is connected to the door's linkage with a plastic clip. That usually breaks. For Manual Air, a cable connected to the control panel controls it's movement. Should all of this check out, try flushing the heater core - it might be partially plugged up.
