Default Tranny problems

I have an 86 vette with the 4+3. I have changed fluid in the OD unit and trans. The fluid that came out was still in good condition. When I start the car, the trans shifts fine...like a hot knife through butter! However, after the car heats up and it has been driven for...oh...about 30-45 minutes, it begins shifting hard. The clutch seems to stiffen up and it is hard to get into gear. Comes out of gear just fine, but going in is, to say the least, very HARD. Oh, also, I don't dare shift into reverse after the car is warm. The gears will grind. If I want reverse, I have to shut the car down, shift into reverse and crank. The only other issue that I see, is where the shifter rods connect to the trans housing. There seems to be an "O" ring there and it leaks a little fluid. Before I replace the slave and pull the trans, I am wondering if anyone has experienced such a problem? Help me out.

I would say clutch problem, does it make any noise? Pedal change (up or down)? Does double clutching/pumping change the problem?

That is a good one.

Heat=poor shifting.

Just off the top of my head I start thinking about hydraulics. So I'm gonna start with the clutch master cylinder and if nothing else, see if I can bleed that system and replace the clutch, plates and TO bearing.

But I know very little about these cars just yet. So wait for the gurus to weigh in.

Clutch makes no noise and height on the clutch does not seem to change. I have attempted to pump the clutch to build pressure, but this does not help. Everything seems to work fine...until it has been driven for more than 30 minutes and the car gets to operating temp.

This is a self adjusting clutch with a cylinder that does not need to be bled. I have read up on the slave cylinder and looked at it and there are not nipples. If the slave did need to be bled, pumping the clutch should work the air out, and pumping the clutch makes no difference.

When I bought the car, the guy I bought it from indicated that the clutch had been replaced. So,there is supposedbly a new clutch in the car.

Sounds like that clutch slave cylinder is getting warm and the seals are not sealing corectly.
Of course, the clutch master could be doing the same thing.
It get's hOT under the hood of a Vette.

Logically it's one or the other....OR both.

Maybe I will go ahead and start with the slave, move to the master...if this fails to sove problem...I guess the whole trans needs to be pulled...YUCK! AT least a buddy of mine has a lift and I can get the car in the air.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
