Default side pipes

Today while driving I saw a 84-90 white vert w/ black top driving down the road and it had side pipes, does anybody know where they can be purchased and if they are functional or not?

I think the company that used to make them (SideEffects, or something like that) is out of business, although you maight find a set on ebay or at a swap meet.

Personally, I don't care for the side pipes on a C4 and don't think they would have any beneficial effect on performance. Unlike the side pipes on the C2's and C3's, a C4 cannot run the side pipes directly from the exhaust manifold or headers, it would have to make several "S" turns to accomodate cats.

PowerEffects.com made them. They were the only ones. They keep saying it will happen again, but that's been the word for four years.

I have them on my car. They could be converted to a true dual setup, if you have enough HP to warrant it. The side pipes do turn up the sides and back. I had the same concern about constriction. That section is 2 3/4" which is signficantly larger cross-section than stock (remember circle area gets bigger exponentially). That extra size makes up for the turns. This has been proven by the manufacturer on a dyno. (On an L98, they add 19HP over stock. LT1s change by 11HP).

You could also make your own setup, but you'd have to use ABS covers (that are shown above), or you'd have to make figerglass. (You could do this by buying the ABS ones to make your mold). Or you could go without covers and just have side exits by the wheels. Ground clearance could be an issue if you don't do it right. Even then, you're going to lose a little no matter what you do....

Don't count on getting a set from PowerEffects. Look for a used set if you really want them. I think the sound and looks are great!

Looks like vettejeff is wanting to unload his sidepipes (see the which cat back exhaust system is loudest thread). You should see if he wants to sell!
