Default dash sensor

Does anyone know the purpose of the sensor located in center of dash near windshield?It has a little round dome over it (95 LT1)

Sounds like automatic headlights. A light sensor so that the headlights will come on when it's dark. I have an older vette, but my Bonneville has that.

I always thought it was so the interiour lights did not come on during daylight only at night when they were needed.

That's the Sun load sensor. It's related to the A/c, giving temp & other info, if my memory serves correctly.

Believe that is the sunload temp sensor for automatic climate control

BTW, how is your little dome held on? Mine was missing the dome and I got one from vette2vette but it seems to just sit over the dome and is not affixed in any way.

I believe it only has to do with the A/C by compensating for increased temperatures inside the car based on the intensity of the sun.

My dome is just sitting on top of dash but it feels snug-I did not want to move it too much because it is probably very brittle after all of these years of sitting in sun and cold winter weather

Yes this is what it is. Mojo refers to the cover as the R2D2 dome unit ontop of the dash.
