I'm thinking of driving from basically LA, California, to El Paso,TX to Dallas, up to Arkansas, to Memphis to Nashville maybe late next week. I'm worried about the weather, I realize it can be good one day and bad on another, but those of you close to that route have any input? Of course it's in a vette.
It'll be a gamble, but it can be done. Just have to be smart about it.
Driving home from FLA to NJ, I got caught in freezing rain in NC and then ice and snow in VA. I pulled over for lunch and hung out with some locals while listening to the radio. I decided it was best to wait out the 127 car pileup further north which was keeping my average speed at about 3 mph.
Basically it was a couple inches of ice underneath a couple inches of snow.
I lived to tell the story and I'm sure you will too. Just use your head.
L.A. to El Paso will probably be ok and El paso to Dallas shold be good (a lot can change in a week at this time of year though). Don't know about the rest of it.
If you stay on I-10 until you get to Mobile, Al. and hit I-65 you will probably be fine. I-10 has the reputation of being the only (normally) snow-free interstate in the nation. What I mean by that statement is there are not normally long periods of time where it is impassible as with the other routes. I would recommend checking the long range forecast and check again each day as you travel.
Are you tranferring? I am retired Navy (26 years).
Not transfering, I'm stationed at Ft. Knox KY, doing the Drill Sergeant thing right now. I might be buying a car and driving it home. Thanks for the help and advice, I appreciate it.
