Default How do I check codes?

Checked my info cluster today cause I've never seen the check engine light light up. Sure enough, mine came from the factory without a bulb
I also had the problem of the "Fasten Seat Belts" light popping on at random for no good reason. I killed 2 birds w/ 1 stone and put the seatbelt bulb in the check engine slot. :D I let the car run at idle for a few minutes but the check engine light did not light up. How do I check the codes now that I can read them?

[edit] Doh it's a 1987 4+3 with bad paint

Jup the top right two pins together.
put the car in ACCESSORY MODE (1 click forward, DONT start)
if you have it correctly jjumped, your fan will come on

the engine will flash a code 12
FLASH PAUSE FLASH FLASH
several times

after that, it will flash the code.

Ok, I guess it flashes each code 3 times and then moves on to the next and when it's done it shows code 12 again and starts over correct?

Here's what I got (it flashed these each 3 times. 1 = flash 0 = pausse):

1011 (code 12)
11101111
1110111111
1111011
and then it started over

Ok I figured it out... 1011 means 12 11011 means 22 111101 means 41. Clever :yesnod:

It looks like I've got:

34 - MAP sensor voltage low: This code is essentially the opposite of code 33; the ECM is receiving signals from either the MAF or MAP that there is an extremely low amount of air flow through the manifold when every other indication is that air flow should be high.

36 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor burnoff failure. TPI only. After vehicle shutdown, a burnoff relay is activated which heats up the MAF sensor wire in order to burn off any deposits that may have collected on it. When this occurs, the ECM will sense 12 volts in the relay ground wire. When it does not see this voltage, it assumes that the relay has failed, or there is an open in the circuit.

42 - Electronic Spark Timing (EST) circuit. This code is set when the ECM does not receive any pulses from the ignition module for more than 200 milliseconds, indicating a fault either in the module itself, or a problem in the harness.

I found a list of codes at http://www.racer-x.f2s.com/proc/codes.htm

under the steering wheel to the right near the hump there is the ALDL. There may be a cover on it that pulls right off. There will be two rows of pins. The top row right 2 pins use a paper clip and jump them.
