I honestly have been pouring through these threads trying to find out the answer to a very stupid question...
Where do I add transmission fluid to my 1986 C4?
I've only had a Vette since last year and I'm kind of an idiot.
I had it in storage this winter and would go down every once in awhile to start it and touch it and kiss it - and when I backed it out one day to just take it on a quick spin - I noticed tranny fluid all over the floor. I guess I have a seal that needs to be replaced.
Anyway, I'm leery about driving it to the shop I go to when I don't know the state of the tranny. It's not far and I feel that if I could get some fluid in it - I could drive it the 2 miles I need to go.
Oddly enough I've put transmission fluid in a number of vehicles - I just can't find that little b@$t@rd on my Vette.
Where is that little "dipstick tube" located on a C4 4+3???
Uh.....manual transmissions don't usually have dipsticks. You have to put the car on a lift, and pull the plug. If fluid runs out...it's full, and if not, then you add till it starts running back out.

Well, it probably would have helped if you would have stated that in the begining. Remember not all C4's have the same tranny.
Sorry, I can't answer your question on the 4+3. I know it is a manual 4-speed transmission with an automatic overdrive attached to the end of it. So yes, the overdrive unit should have automatic tranny fluid in it. And I would think that there is a way to fill or check it.
Well, I'll hang out and see if someone else has an idea. I'd have to have to have it towed just to get it to the shop.
I just don't know how this works on a 4+3. I would think that if they have an "automatic" portion of the transmission, it would have included a way for the owner to fill it besides throwing it up on a lift.
Two places to fill on that 4+3. The overdrive in back uses ATF fluid, the front end uses gear oil. If you saw ATF fluid on the garage floor, it would have come from the OD unit.
This link gives you some history on the 4+3. Given the placement of the overdrive unit, a dipstick would come up through the seat and into your crotch...a good reason not to put one in the car! http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....article_id=980
Last note: Fill out your profile with your year, transmission, RPO options, etc.. Won't get so many grumpy Forum members poking in the eye for details after you post a question. Good luck getting your car back on the road!
Okay... I guess I'll do the last thing - take it to a tranny place. I had all of that done last year when I bought it. Drained all the fluids and had a mechanic I know check them out - look for uglies in the oil, tranny fluid, etc.
Finding the problem is the first step...this is the place to bring them. You done right by asking for advice; plenty of folks here have made mistakes. You get to learn by their experience.
