Default 94 driver side window problems

I just recently replaced the targa top weather stripping on my 94 vette and the driverside window doesn't seal properly against it when i close the door. I have to close the door and then lower and raise the window in order to get it to seal properly. It seems like the window has too much play. Is this a common problem and how do i fix it?

Did you buy the weather strip from a dealer or from one of the (MA,Eckler's,CC, etc) suppliers?
Most of the aftermarket foam for sale is too hard, compared to original GM stock. Something to do with EPA banning the manufacturing process.

There are adjustments inside the door for the tracking and rattle stop. IF you have to go there I would recommend the FSM.

I bought the weather stripping from lonestar muslcar off of ebay. It works just fine on the passenger side. The glass on the drivers side seems a lot looser than the other side. Someone told me that it might be a clip in the door, but i don't know what they're talking about.

If you feel your window has too much play, your best bet would be to adjust the felt "guides" inside the door panel. If you have a factory service manual, follow the instructions there. If not, I'll "guide" you with the steps I used to do my 96 - just be aware that they might not be exactly identical to your model year.

To remove the door panel:

- Roll down your window, disconnect battery (standard disclaimer - I hardly ever disconnect my battery, but all the things you read say to do so, so I will to)

- Remove all plastic fasteners along the bottom of the door panel. I accomplished this without marring the panel or the fasteners by prying them up gently with a flathead screwdriver and then grabbing the shaft with a pair of needlenose and pulling straight out.

- Remove the 2 screws in the down in the "cup" portion of your inner door pull (this is the piece you grab onto to shut the door once you're inside the car). Carefully remove that piece and disconnect the wiring to the window and mirror switches.

- Remove the screw you can see when you look into the inside door latch area (i.e., the thing you pull to open the door when you're inside).

- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the door light from the top, down. Remove the screw behind there.

- Manually move the lock mechanisn to "unlocked" and gently pry the plastic cover off. This is accomplished by inserting the blade of the screwdriver under the forward-facing portion of the cover -- your screwdriver should be parallel to the ground and pointing towards the rear tires (assuming the door is closed, which it won't be). Pop it out.

- You'll notice a screw behind the cad-plated lock mechanism now that the cover has been removed. You may need to move the lock to the "locked" position, but either way, remove the screw behind there.

The door panel should now be free, but you'll first need to work that cad-plated lock mechanism out of the plastic trim surround by manipulating the door panel. Sounds confusing, but you'll see what I mean. Once completed, to remove the panel, grasp it on both sides and first lift UP, then away from the door.

STOP!

Don't forget to disconnect the wire to the rear hatch release switch at this point - they're fairly short.

The felt window guides are atop the door and are fastened by 10mm hex bolts. These are what may be loose causing your window to have "play." Adjust and tighten as necessary.

Hope that helps! I should mention that, while you're in there, this would be the time to replace that outer door weatherstripping if it's in bad shape... Best of luck.

Aaron
