Default need help! 91 wont start MORE INFO

91 started up great. I changed the 02 sensor and it started up again, no problem. shut the hood went to drive it and it wont start.

Put the old 02 sensor back in and it still wont start.

It is getting spark (used a screw driver in a plug wire to find out)

getting gas (pushed in the valve on the fuel on the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail (it didn't squirt out but fuel came out))

Any idea?????????

Drove the car last weekend for over an hour with out any problem other than running a littel rough while idling. O2 sensor was old (maybe original) so I changed it.

After i posted the above thread I went outside. I turned on the key and listened for the fuel pump to engage. I heard it click in the back and a noise somewhere on the engine. So I tried to start it and it did.

Went to drive it around the block and it died. opened the fuel cap and there wasn't any pressure like normal. tried it a few more times with 30 seconds between tries and it finally finally started. Drove it another couple hundred yards and it died again.

Tried to start and you could tell the fuel pump wasn't turning on. Did the 30 second wait a few times and tried again. Finally started. Made it to the driveway.

Once in the driveway I let it run and it died within a minute.

I changed the fuel pump about a month ago and it hasnt got more than a couple of hours on in.

Could it be a bad fuel pump or is there something else I should do before I change it again. got this one at Checker.

dont think i screwed anything up changing the O2 Sensor do you? it was pretty simple, one wire.

Things I have done to it this month, in order

Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter

Spark Plugs

distributer cap and rotor

O2 sensor
put the old one back on

no squirt? that sounds like a bad fuel pump or clogged filter.

I would get a fuel pressure gauge on that thing.

The best way to know for sure is put a pressure guage on it. A bad fuel pump can still pump a little fuel tricking you into thinking it's working. Also dissconnect the fuel pump relay from the firewall (between the brake booster and engine) take the cap off and see if it closes when you try to start it.

Cant get the car to mess up now. afraid to drive it.

I read your words but cant find the relay. can you describe it so a dumb Kansas boy can understand it. I am one of those picture guys. I have the Chiltons and factory service manual and cant find a picture.

Bogus was right. now that it is working again (on its own) the fuel sprays (with lots of pressure) out of the valve whether the car is running or not.
