They are available through most auto parts stores. I would by new reather than used.
Easy to replace and find at your local Autozone or Checker/Schuck/Kragen auto parts store. About a 10 Min job tops. Just buy new did mine last month make a hell of a difference.
Just a suggestion, when you go to replace yours, take an open end wrench (10 mm I think) and place carefully in such a way that you can exert enough downward force to pop the struts out. I found this MUCH easier than trying to use a flat blade.
Also, mine came from autozone new... the only problem is the defroster posts both go the same direction. That said, I could easily connect one defroster but unfortunately I did have the same luck with the other. I'll probably create a pig tail to get past this issue at a later point if I really feel bored.
My struts must be fine, then, as the hatch has no problem staying open. What it *doesn't* do all the time, though, is open fully when I press the button. It'll pop about half-way, and then it slows to a stop. If I give it a little "encouragement," it'll continue all the way to the top.
Also, it seems as though the strut mounts have started to rattle where they connect to the glass, and that's driving me crazy...
I'm tired of lifting mine up manually. It doesn't stay up, have to hold it up with one hand. Should it pop ! and then lift on its own, or will I have to still put a hand on it ?

You get stitches because you open the hatch to do something in your trunk and because the struts are bad, the trunk lid falls on your head causing the need for stitches.
