Default Need advice

Hi, I have ben eyeing c4 vetts for a while. I really think they are better looking than the c5 (not that i could afford a c5 anyway). They are very clean looking and i like that. I also love the interior. I'm 17 and I have been driving a 1988 5.0 Mustang convertible for a year now. To be honest, I think the Mustang looks as good if not better on the outside as the c4 but the c4 has a very nice interior, more power, and of course the corvette name.

I am going to look at c4s next saturday at classic car dealership that has tons of corvettes. If I find one I like (leather, manual, convertible) I just might trade in the stang.

What should I look out for? I heard the water pump goes on these cars at around 75k. Also how would the c4 (LT1) be for a daily driver? Are these cars reliable? My mustang has 160000miles on it and runs like it's new, is the c4 comparable? How does the c4 fit someone who is 6'5 with shoes on? Is there room for golf clubs?

Thanks for the help.

Glad you are considering switching over.

Im 18 and have had my '84 as a DD for 3 years with out any problems. If you cant find a convertable all C4's are targa tops, which i perfer. It is more secure and you can still go topless. There is a thread around here somewhere in a C4 section about height and fitting into C4's. I think that it ended up with - If you have a glass(see-through) roof or converable that gives you another inch of headroom, and if you have power seats that gives you a bit more room too.

Some people have trouble with them, and some(like me) get one that never has a problem. If you can do most of your own work you will save a lot of money in labor. Also there shouldnt be a problem fitting club's into the back. There is more room back there then you would expect.

Another bit of advice, you have a car now... dont rush into this and jump on the first Vette you see. Wait till you find a good one that you will be happy with.

Forget golf clubs in a convertible, unless you put them in the front with you (passengers’ side of course).

Seriously, there's a C4 Buyers Guide floating around here somewhere. I'll try to find a link to it. LT1 is fine for a DD and is just as reliable as your Mustang assuming it is and was as well maintained as your Mustang. Others will be along with advice as well. Welcome to the Forum and good luck with your search...

Golf clubs are a must as i live in FL and im on the varsity golf team. Is there room for them in the removable top modle? is it called the targa top? How do I afford it? lol free golf when on the school team but i will have to make payments on the vette. My mustang is incredebly reliable. Only reason I ask is because I don't want to give up a reliable car for one that has problems (I am aware im taking a risk no matter how good the cars reputation is) and have to make payments on it. And yes I do all work myself and I take care of my stuff.

I don't golf as I've got enough frustration in my life as it is ( ) but I'm almost positive that they'll fit in the back of the coupe without taking off the removable top (hell, I got a Xmas tree in there once). There are quite a few members here who made the switch from Mustangs to Corvettes and in fact, a number of them have both. Hopefully, they'll find this thread...

Clubs will fit in the roadster. I've had 2 sets in there before. Top up though. Let's see......Mines a former DD, 130K miles, original engine, still going strong. Great choice for a fun little ride. Take your time and chose well. You'll be hooked before long.

There is no way my golf clubs would fit in the back of my 90 coupe. Maybe my golf bag is to big....
Nice choice switching to a C4, you wont regret it. I was in a similar situation as you when I was 18. I ended up going with a 90 coupe 6 speed. Its way more fun to drive then a 5.0 Stang!

Sounds funny, but I was worried more about cosmetic condition, paint, body, interior, than anything else. This stuff is going to cost considerably more on the Vette than on your stang.

Hard to compare them in the looks category, they're completely different looking cars.

Anyhow, I'd avoid the used car dealers. You can end up paying a premium on a polished turd. You'll find that most private party sellers don't take good care of their vettes, but they are out there.

The earlier they get, the slower they get, and the cheaper they get to repair, and easier to repair. The speed difference isn't much, and you won't notice too much in city driving. The manual trans vettes have a stronger drivetrain, and will get better fuel mileage.

The C4s overall won't be as dependable as your fox-body. The waterpump is the least of your worries though, they are cheap.

Being a golfer I can tell you that your clubs will fit in a coupe...BUT...in my 93 I have to pull the woods out of the bag first...then the clubs go in the back on an angle...then you lay the woods over the bag at a slightly different angle...

Thanks Dan! OK, we got the golf club problem licked, now on to the C4 vs. Mustang 5.0 reliability issue resolution...

The removeable top IS a targa top. You can get the "regular" one or the clear (though with age it can crack from the stress of the body's flexing).. I suggest buying the clear one later on because you can have both. All coupes are targas and I believe are not as expensive as the convertibles. I'm sure you'd have more room in a coupe for the clubs than in a convertible.

My '93 has been Unbelieveably reliable and never once has it left me stranded (I thought it would be a nightmare to be honest). Being a '93, it has an LT1 and has been a fun yet relaxing daily driver.. allbeit, mine's an auto, from what I've heard on the forum, both auto and manual are great as daily drivers (though manual might have a few more dollars attached to it.

I admit I'm biased toward the '93... love everything about it, the raw road feel, cockpit-like feel, and definitely the lines of it and I really enjoy the PKE system . I'm a freshman in college and drove it to highschool too and have gotten many compliments.

When buying, be aware of what does and doesn't work. I had to replace the PKE receiver and key fob (and '93 was the first year for this system), bought a rebuilt CD player from GM (the stock system on my car does sound great), and I still need to replace the weatherstripping which will cost a pretty penny.

Do your research, test drive, look around and buy what you love! Hope you can make the switch and join the Corvette community! We're all very willing to help and if you do buy one, make sure you wave to all fellow Corvette drivers!

May I make a suggestion? Why don't you repost with some reference to current or former Mustang 5.0 owners in the subject line. Something like "Need advice from current or former Mustang 5.0 owners" will be more likely to get the people who can really answer your questions into your thread. Good luck...

A normal size golf bag won't fit well in the back of a C4. You'd expect that to be their #1 design criteria. They got it right on the C5 at least.
