Need advice
I am going to look at c4s next saturday at classic car dealership that has tons of corvettes. If I find one I like (leather, manual, convertible) I just might trade in the stang.
What should I look out for? I heard the water pump goes on these cars at around 75k. Also how would the c4 (LT1) be for a daily driver? Are these cars reliable? My mustang has 160000miles on it and runs like it's new, is the c4 comparable? How does the c4 fit someone who is 6'5 with shoes on? Is there room for golf clubs?
Thanks for the help.

Im 18 and have had my '84 as a DD for 3 years with out any problems. If you cant find a convertable all C4's are targa tops, which i perfer. It is more secure and you can still go topless. There is a thread around here somewhere in a C4 section about height and fitting into C4's. I think that it ended up with - If you have a glass(see-through) roof or converable that gives you another inch of headroom, and if you have power seats that gives you a bit more room too.
Some people have trouble with them, and some(like me) get one that never has a problem. If you can do most of your own work you will save a lot of money in labor. Also there shouldnt be a problem fitting club's into the back. There is more room back there then you would expect.
Another bit of advice, you have a car now... dont rush into this and jump on the first Vette you see. Wait till you find a good one that you will be happy with.

but i will have to make payments on the vette. My mustang is incredebly reliable. Only reason I ask is because I don't want to give up a reliable car for one that has problems (I am aware im taking a risk no matter how good the cars reputation is) and have to make payments on it. And yes I do all work myself and I take care of my stuff.

) but I'm almost positive that they'll fit in the back of the coupe without taking off the removable top (hell, I got a Xmas tree in there once). There are quite a few members here who made the switch from Mustangs to Corvettes and in fact, a number of them have both. Hopefully, they'll find this thread...

Nice choice switching to a C4, you wont regret it. I was in a similar situation as you when I was 18. I ended up going with a 90 coupe 6 speed. Its way more fun to drive then a 5.0 Stang!

Hard to compare them in the looks category, they're completely different looking cars.
Anyhow, I'd avoid the used car dealers. You can end up paying a premium on a polished turd. You'll find that most private party sellers don't take good care of their vettes, but they are out there.
The earlier they get, the slower they get, and the cheaper they get to repair, and easier to repair. The speed difference isn't much, and you won't notice too much in city driving. The manual trans vettes have a stronger drivetrain, and will get better fuel mileage.
The C4s overall won't be as dependable as your fox-body. The waterpump is the least of your worries though, they are cheap.

And yes I do all work myself and I take care of my stuff. My '93 has been Unbelieveably reliable and never once has it left me stranded (I thought it would be a nightmare to be honest). Being a '93, it has an LT1 and has been a fun yet relaxing daily driver.. allbeit, mine's an auto, from what I've heard on the forum, both auto and manual are great as daily drivers (though manual might have a few more dollars attached to it.
I admit I'm biased toward the '93... love everything about it, the raw road feel, cockpit-like feel, and definitely the lines of it and I really enjoy the PKE system
. I'm a freshman in college and drove it to highschool too and have gotten many compliments. When buying, be aware of what does and doesn't work. I had to replace the PKE receiver and key fob (and '93 was the first year for this system), bought a rebuilt CD player from GM (the stock system on my car does sound great), and I still need to replace the weatherstripping which will cost a pretty penny.
Do your research, test drive, look around and buy what you love! Hope you can make the switch and join the Corvette community! We're all very willing to help and if you do buy one, make sure you wave to all fellow Corvette drivers!
