Default "Smart Chips" for a 1996

Just wondering how much HP and Torque is added when you put in a "Smart Chip". Note it is a LT1

No such thing in a 96. It has a computer/module that needs to be reprogrammed. And if everything is still stock, there really isn't much to be gained anyway...

The car might feel faster after you reflash it with a programmer because they change the shift points. It is good for turning on the cooling fans though. How much Hp? Don't know.

http://www.pcmforless.com/

If you do a search in this forum you will see a boatload of satisfied customers. Can't speak to a '96, but my bone stock '93 6-spd was improved.

My 84 has a different ECM from a Camaro and then a Hi Pro chip was installed on the Camaro ECM by previous owner. Can some one tell me what the advantage of reflashing the orginal ECM would have over what was done to my car, if there is any advantage?

I dont think youll be able to flash the chip on that one, probably a replacable chip.

There is a performance gain with the reprogramming for the '96. Bryan at PCMFORLESS changed the timing, fuel/air settings with higher fuel octane numbers (93). Took the intake exhaust mods into consideration. Factory is de-tuned a bit. It idles imperceptively at 700 with zero shake now. I added the LT-4 knock module underneath in place of stock to eliminate spark retard under acceleration too. That was programmed in as well. The shift points stay the same, just upped the pressure and made them faster and firmer. The 3-4 is great now.

The new fan settings justified the cost in itself. Now at standstill the temp goes from 196 to 208, NEVER higher because the '96 has 2 speed fans. You can't hear them come on low. Totally happy with the new brain! Many many others say the same.

Seems I read an ad where you can program an LT1 using LT4 parameters to gain better performance but can't talk to it though...

If you mod the LT1 to be simular to the LT4 that might work, but if its a stock LT1 and you put the LT4 settings on it, its not going to help you at all.
